Men's Basketball

Hofstra 70, Northeastern 65

Hofstra senior Antoine Agudio scored a game-high 32 points, including his 2,000th career point, as the Pride topped the Northeastern University men's basketball team 70-65 Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

Agudio, who was 11-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-8 behind the arc, scored nearly half of his team's total points. Hofstra had only one other player in double figures, Charles Jenkins with 11 points.

Sophomore captain Matt Janning led a trio of double-digit scoring Huskies with 17 points. Sophomores Nkem Ojougboh and Manny Adako had 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Despite forcing more turnovers and shooting better from the free throw line than Hofstra, the Huskies were a victim of their own shooting woes. They were only 35 percent from the field for the game, including just 27 percent in the first half. Meanwhile, the Pride shot 48 percent for the contest, 56 percent in the second half.

The Pride controlled the first half as Agudio knocked down five jumpers, including three three-pointers, to pick up 16 points. Northeastern struggled to find its shooting rhythm and the Pride went into the halftime break with a 30-22 advantage.

The Huskies (7-12, 3-6 CAA) quickly got back into the game with an 8-2 run to open the second half and they eventually tied it at 39-39 with 14:42 on the clock when freshman Vinny Lima drained a three-pointer in the corner.

Hofstra (5-13, 3-6 CAA) got the lead back to seven points, 50-43, but the Huskies answered with a 7-0 run that ended when junior Eugene Spates hit a big shot from downtown with 9:32 to play. The game was tied at 50-50.

The two teams traded the lead a few times until the Huskies seemingly took control with four minutes to play as Ojougboh connected on two free throws to give NU a 63-60 lead. Agudio followed that with a missed three-pointer and the Huskies came back down the court with a chance to take a two-possesion lead, but Lima's wide open three attempt missed and Agudio came back down and knocked down a jumper to cut the Husky lead to one, 63-62, with 3:10 on the clock.

Ojougboh was fouled again and he hit his free throws again to make it 65-62, but the Pride came back with two more points as Darren Townes picked up a layup. On the next possession, the Huskies were stopped as freshman Chaisson Allen missed a three. That gave the Pride the chance they needed as Agudio found an open lane and drove in for a layup to give his team the 66-65 lead with 1:32 to play.

Ojougboh missed a jumper with 1:10 on the clock and Agudio put in his final basket of the night to make it 68-65. Agudio scored nine of his team's last 13 points. With the chance to tie, Janning missed a long three and Jenkins grabbed the board, was fouled and hit his free throws to ice it.

Northeastern will be back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when it faces Delaware for the second time this season at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. at 7 p.m.
