Northeastern 53, Delaware 49

The Northeastern University men's basketball team had three players record double-doubles and came out on top of Delaware 53-49 Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del.

Freshman Chaisson Allen scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, his second career double-double, sophomore Nkem Ojougboh scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, his fourth career double-double, and sophomore Manny Adako had 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first career double-double. Sophomore captain Matt Janning also was a key figure for the Huskies, scoring a team-high 13 points.

The Huskies (8-12, 4-6 CAA), who completed a regular season sweep of the Blue Hens with the win, shot only 34.6 percent in the game, 20 percent from downtown, but overcame that by outrebounding Delaware (42-34) and hitting more free throws (14-5). Delaware (9-11, 6-4 CAA) also suffered from poor shooting, going only 33.9 percent from the field.

Northeastern got off to a great start, taking control of the game from the outset and holding the lead the entire first half. The Huskies rattled off a 10-2 run to open the game, which included a steal by Ojougboh and a subsequent fastbreak layup by Janning at 15:31.

Delaware fought strong and stayed close, but the Huskies got their lead up to 10 points, 28-18, as Allen ran over the Blue Hens with 11 first-half points. He connected on a jumper at 2:20 and followed it up with a long three from the corner at 0:31 to help NU take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, both teams struggled to put points on the board, but the Blue Hens rallied to make it a game again. They went on a 17-6 run to open the half, taking their first lead of the game at 12:26 when Marc Egerson made the second of two free throws and at 12:01 when Herb Courtney picked up a layup, making it 40-37 Delaware.

The Huskies tied the game back up at 40-40 when Janning hit a three at 9:57, but the Hens answered back 36 seconds later when Brian Johnson hit a three of his own, to put the score at 43-40.

Delaware was clinging to a 44-42 lead at 5:46 when sophomore Baptiste Bataille hit a long three in traffic to give the Huskies the lead once more, 45-44. Neither team scored again until Ojougboh hit two free throws at 2:30. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens were unable to hit a shot late in the game, going 0-for-9 from the floor between 5:50 and 0:04. Ojougboh hit two more free throws to make it 49-44 before Courtney knocked down a three to end Delaware's drought with four seconds left.

On the following inbound play, Ojougboh was fouled again and he hit two more free throws to give NU a four-point advantage, 51-47. Delaware threw the ball down court and Jim Ledsome hit a quick layup to cut the deficit to two. Janning was then fouled on the inbound and he hit his two free throws with one second left to ice it.

Northeastern, which has now won seven straight games over the Blue Hens, continues its road trip with a Saturday evening contest against Drexel at the Daskalakis Center in Philadelphia at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on CN8.
