Northeastern suffered a 5-0 loss to the No. 16 Drexel Dragons at Sweeney Field Friday. The loss drops Northeastern to 7-10, 1-4 CAA.
The Huskies fell behind early when Drexel's Christina Mastropaolo got on the board less than three minutes into the game. She scored again 11:18 into the contest when she got her stick on a shot that had popped into the air, and redirected it past NU goalie Sam Sewell.
The Dragons did well taking balls out of the air all day, and scored their third goal on another aerial redirect, this time from Elizabeth Koch.
Northeastern appeared to have found their first goal at 26:10 when Annie Clayman's effort found the back of the cage, but teh referees ruled that Clayman had fired from outside the shooting circle, and no goal was awarded.
Sewell made a big play midway through the period when she charged out of the goalmouth to snuff out a Drexel breakaway. She and the Huskies defense had trouble keeping the high-powered Drexel offense off the board, and the Dragons got tallies off a backhand shot from Amanda Kicera, and a two-on-none fast break, which Susan Ciufo converted.
Thye Huskies battled the Dragons even in teh second half, but could not find any offense, and finished the game down 5-0.
The loss drops Northeastern to 1-4 in the CAA. They play Hofstra Sun. Oct. 26, before taking on James Madison, and completing their conference slate Nov. 2 at Virginia Commonwealth. They can secure a bid to the CAA tournament by finishing in sixth place or higher.
