Boston University shot 54 percent from the field and tied a school record with 15 three-pointers as the Terriers defeated the Northeastern men's basketball team 83-75 Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
BU's Corey Lowe led all scorers with 27 points, 23 coming in the first half. Jake O'Brien led the Terriers with five three-pointers. He finished with 21 points.
Matt Janning led the Huskies with 22 points, extending his double-digit scoring streak to 24 games. He also now has scored 20-plus points in three straight games, and he is 31 points away from 1,000 in his career. He also added seven assists and five rebounds.
In the first half, both teams slugged it out with a fast-pace shooting contest. Lowe dominated the scoring by putting in seven of BU's first nine field goals. His steal and fastbreak layup at 9:50 of the first half gave the Terriers a 22-16 lead, their largest lead of the half.
Janning responded with a jumper, and Matt Smith's three at 7:50 tied the score at 22-22. Janning later drained a pair of threes within 40 seconds of each other and then picked up a fastbreak layup at 1:53, giving the Huskies a 37-32 advantage.
The Terriers responded with a 7-1 run to take a one-point lead, but Janning's buzzer-beating jumper put Northeastern on top going into the break, 40-39.
In the second half, BU turned to the three-point shot as O'Brien stepped in and nailed three three-pointers in the first six minutes. The Terriers built a 10-point lead, 59-49, with 13:05 remaining.
The Huskies got as close as five after Janning's jumper at 8:25, but everytime they came close, BU drained another three. Tyler Morris' trey at 6:14 allowed BU to reclaim a 10-point lead. NU was unable to mount another comeback.
In total, BU hit eight three-pointers in the second half, five by O'Brien. On the night, BU made more three-pointers than two-pointers.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field, but they were only 35 percent from behind the arc. They also struggled from the free throw line, going only 15-for-26 (57.7 percent). BU shot 83 percent (10-for-12) from the charity stripe.
In addition to Janning's 22, Chaisson Allen scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Nkem Ojougboh had 13 points.
The loss snaps Northeastern's modest two-game winning streak, and also snaps a four-game stretch of wins over the Terriers. NU had not lost to its in-city rival since 2004.
Northeastern will resume play on Saturday, Nov. 29 when the Huskies face the University of South Florida at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., at 7 p.m.
