South Florida kept the Northeastern offense from getting into a rhythm, holding the Huskies to 24 percent shooting in a 55-37 win Saturday night at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla.
Dominique Jones led the Bulls with 20 points. Manny Adako led the Huskies with 10 points, but he fouled out midway through the second half. The 37 points scored is the fewest for Northeastern since scoring only 37 at Connecticut on Nov. 25, 1996.
The first half was low-scoring as both teams struggled with an unfriendly rim. The Huskies made just four baskets, shooting 13 percent from the field with many of their shots rimming out. Northeastern did not crack the double-digit mark until Nkem Ojougboh's basket at 5:30 gave the Huskies an 11-10 lead. From there, the Bulls ended the half on an 11-0 run with Chris Howard putting the exclamation point on the scoring with a three-pointer with five seconds left.
In the second half, both teams were able to hit a few more shots, but the Bulls' defense pressured the Huskies into bad shots. USF shot 50 percent in the second half, getting 11 points from Jones and eight points from Jesus Verdejo.
Northeastern junior captain Matt Janning was held to three points and one field goal, snapping his double-digit scoring streak at 24 games.
Northeastern will regroup and face Rhode Island on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Matthews Arena. The two teams will tip off at 7 p.m.
