Huskies shock Indiana, 55-42

The Northeastern men's basketball team received 17 points and five steals from Matt Janning and forced 21 Indiana turnovers as the Huskies upset the Hoosiers 55-42 Monday night at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. The Huskies ended the first half on a 25-6 run to take control and win the game.

"Any time you can get a win on the road against a quality opponent such as IU, it's a terrific thing," said head coach Bill Coen. "I thought it was a very hard fought basketball game on both ends. We were just fortunate enough to get a couple of bounces and get some rebounds today, and I thought that was the difference in the game."

The victory was Northeastern's first over a Big Ten school since 1991 and the team's first win over Indiana in three tries. It was Indiana's first loss to a CAA team after winning its first 10. The 42 points allowed is the fewest by a Northeastern team since Drexel had only 40 on Feb. 2, 2008. It was also the fewest points ever scored by the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall.

Trailing 14-7 in the first half, the Huskies went on an 11-0 run that spanned 5:53. Baptiste Bataille took a kick-out pass from Janning and drained a three-pointer. Chaisson Allen followed with a jumper and Spates put the Huskies up for the first time with a trey at 9:05, giving NU a 15-14 lead.

Following a steal, Allen hit a fastbreak layup and Janning hit one of two free throws to put NU up 18-14 before Kyle Taber hit a layup at 5:24 to end the run. However, the Huskies did not let up as Manny Adako hit a jumper in the lane at 4:56 followed with a dunk off a pass from Nkem Ojougboh at 4:29 for a 22-16 Huskies advantage.

Northeastern closed out the half on a 6-0 run as Ojougboh made a basket and in the final seconds, Allen made two free throws and then stripped Daniel Moore of the ball, and Baptiste Bataille picked up the loose ball and connected on a layup at the buzzer. The Huskies led 28-18 at the break.

In the second half, the Hoosiers closed to within six points, 34-28, on a layup from Devan Dumes. However, the Huskies quickly rebuilt a 14-point lead with a 10-2 run that included a wide open lay-in from Chris Alvarez.

Janning put the crowd to rest with back-to-back baskets at 3:21 and 2:40 to keep the lead in double digits, 48-37. In the final two minutes, NU was 7-for-9 from the free throw line to ice the game.

Indiana was led by Tom Pritchard, who scored 12 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

Northeastern will break for the holidays and resume play on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at NCAA Tournament national runner-up Memphis at FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn., at 2 p.m. Eastern. The game will be televised on Comcast Charter Sports South.
