Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas combined for 37 points and George Mason shot 55 percent for the game as the Patriots topped the Northeastern University men's basketball team 63-52 in the CAA quarterfinals Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.
George Mason moves on to play UNC Wilmington in the semifinals while the Huskies' season comes to an end at 14-17.
The Huskies had four players in double figures, but shot only 36 percent in the game. Freshman Chaisson Allen and junior Eugene Spates each scored 11 points to lead NU. Sophomores Manny Adako and Matt Janning each chipped in 10 points. For Janning, it was his 19th consecutive double-digit scoring effort, which is tops in the CAA.
The Huskies led 11-9 early on as Adako scored six points in an effort to pound the paint, but a Mason 8-0 run gave the Patriots control of the game and a lead they would never relinquish. The Patriots spread the ball around as seven different players connected on field goals in the first half.
Northeastern was able to break Mason's run when Allen was fouled by Dre Smith on a three-point attempt. His three free throws got the Huskies within five, 21-16, but the Patriots ended the half with a 12-4 run. Mason used ball control as its weapon, outrebounding NU 18-10 and committing just one turnover in the first half.
The Huskies tried to make a comeback in the second half as they started to knock down three-pointers. Spates nailed one at 13:53 to cut Mason's lead to 10, Alvarez then stripped Thomas of the ball and Spates drained another three to get the Huskies within seven, 39-32.
However, George Mason proved to be too strong as the Patriots were able to get the ball inside to Thomas and company. After Spates' three, Thomas connected on a three-point play. NU then went 7:19 without hitting a field goal, though the team did pick up 11 points at the free throw line. The Huskies never got closer than five points.
Northeastern ends the year with a 14-17 record, a 9-9 CAA mark and a sixth-place finish. The Huskies reached the CAA quarterfinals for the third year in a row and NU is one of only four CAA teams to have a .500 record or better in each of the last three seasons.
