Northeastern 1, Quinnipiac 0

Northeastern secured a 1-0 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats at Sweeney Field today. Northeastern's Ashley Bascetta scored the game-winning goal after both teams were scoreless through regulation time.

Northeastern dominated possession for most of the game, and was able to keep the ball in the Bobcats' end consistently during regulation, but could not come away with a goal. The Huskies' dominance was reflected in the fact that Northeastern outshot Quinnipiac 22-3. "I wished we could have capitalized on some more of those 22 shots," head coach Cheryl Murtagh commented after the game. "Quinnipiac is a decent team and they could have beat us, but I'm happy that we didn't let it get us down, and proud that we stepped up late and won the game."

The game-winner came 1:55 in to the first overtime period. After Kaela Barker was given a yellow card late in the second half, the Huskies were forced to play down a player to start the overtime period. They nevertheless were able to move the ball into Quinnipiac territory and earn a pair of penalty corners. On the second, Anne-Reike Stuhlmann controlled the entry pass from Carolyn Malloy, made a move to the right as if to shoot, then slotted the ball to her left towards Bascetta. Bascetta controlled the ball, and buried a difficult backhanded shot into to opposite corner of the goal for the win.

The Huskies travel to Boston University Sunday, Sept. 14, and return to Sweeney Field Weds., Sept. 17 to take on Brown.
