Field Hockey

Northeastern 7, Brown 1

The Huskies extended their winning streak to four games at Sweeney Field Wednesday with a 7-1 victory over the Brown Bears.

Northeastern was without the services of standout freshman forward and team points leader Carolyn Malloy. Malloy suffered a knee injury during Sunday's 2-1 win over #18 Boston University, and did not dress against Brown.

Northeastern needed only 2:18 to get on the board, with freshman Annie Clayman carrying the ball into the circle and converting on an open shot. The Huskies' second goal came a mere 8:33 later on a Meg Sweeney deflection of a Katie Ruth entry pass.

Pam Aldridge got on the board next for the Huskies, courtesy of a perfectly executed penalty corner by Meg Sweeney and Anne-Reike Stuhlmann.

Brown's only score of the game, which coach Murtagh later described a "bit of a lapse," came when Sara Eaton was able to receive an entry pass while unmarked inside the circle, and beat goalkeeper Colleen Duffy.

After Eaton's goal, the action all belonged to the Huskies in the second half. Ashley Bascetta fired the ball to an open Meg Sweeney on the left post, and Sweeney one-timed the ball into the net for her second goal of the game.

Another well-executed penalty corner gave Jillian Wilkes the opportunity to tally her first career goal, after Bascetta chose to fire a pass towards Wilkes at the left post, rather than shoot off a perfect set from Stuhlmann. Wilkes converted the opportunity, and extended the Huskies' lead to 5-1.

Aldridge notched her second goal of the game when a pass from Stuhlmann found her unmarked on the right side of the circle, and a well-placed shot beat Brown goalkeeper Caroline Washburn.

Bascetta got on the board in the game's final minutes off a nice pass from Kaela Barker.

Five different Huskies scored goals, and three players ended with multi-point games: Sweeney with five on two goals and an assist, Bascetta with four on a goal and two assists, and Aldridge with four on two goals.

After the game, coach Murtagh commented: "It was good to see our offense going like that. Brown might be struggling lately, but they are not a bad team, so I was very happy that we could put that many goals in. Also, they came from a variety of players, which was nice to see." The Huskies do not play until Sept. 26, when they begin conference play against William & Mary at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m.
