Charles Jenkins scored a game-high 23 points to lead Hofstra to a 57-52 win over the Northeastern men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y.
The loss is Northeastern's first in CAA competition this season, snapping a six-game conference winning streak and five-game overall winning streak. Nevertheless, Northeastern has still won eight of its last 10 games. The Huskies are now 11-6, 6-1 in the CAA. Hofstra improves to 11-7, 3-4 in the CAA.
The Huskies were clinging to a 51-50 lead with 1:47 left after Manny Adako hit a layup from the right block. However, Adako was called for a foul with 45 seconds left as Jenkins was driving to the hoop. Jenkins hit both free throws to give the Pride a 52-51 lead. On NU's next possession, Janning turned the ball over to Tony Dennison, who passed to Greg Johnson, who was fouled by Janning. Johnson hit both free throws and the Pride led 54-51.
Janning was then fouled by Nathaniel Lester, but converted just one of two shots, so the Pride still had a two-point lead, 54-52, with 18 seconds left. Forced to foul, Chaisson Allen fouled Dennison, who only made one of two free throws, leaving the Huskies with an opening, down three 55-52.
The Huskies brought the ball up and put it in the hands of Janning, who missed the tying three-point shot. But Chris Alvarez grabbed the rebound, but was forced into a corner by the Pride. Alvarez put up a desperation three, but missed. NU fouled once more and Jenkins made both free throws to end it.
The Pride's run at the end to win capped a strong second half in which they outscored the Huskies 31-23. Northeastern, which had shot 45 percent in the first half, fell to 31.8 percent shooting in the second half. Also, after making four of seven three-pointers in the first half, the Huskies were just 1-for-8 from behind the arc in the second half.
Janning led NU with 14 points and seven rebounds, but was just 3-for-11 shooting on the day. Adako added 13 points.
The first half was a grind as both defenses stiffened up. The Pride took an early 11-6 lead as Darren Townes made three baskets in the first 4:16 of the game, including an explosive dunk on a pass from Nathaniel Lester.
The Huskies turned the game around behind Janning and his three-point shot. He sank a three at 12:57 to cut Hofstra's lead to three, 12-9. He then drained an NBA-range three at 5:44 to tie the game at 16-16. He gave Northeastern its first lead of the game when he banged home a trey from the corner at 4:40 for a 19-18 lead.
Hofstra went back up 26-21 after Urbutis had a tip-in off his own miss at 1:30, but the Huskies came right back with an 8-0 run to end the half. Matt Smith started the run with a three-pointer to cut the Pride's lead to two. Adako tied the game when he grabbed a rebound off Janning's missed three under the basket and put it back in. He was fouled on the play and sank the free throw for the one-point, 27-26 advantage with 36 seconds left.
Hofstra held the ball for the final shot, but the NU defense forced a shot clock violation with 1.1 seconds on the clock. The Huskies took a timeout and drew up a play. Allen lobbed an inbound pass to Ojougboh, who was waiting under the basket. He grabbed the ball and put it in as the buzzer sounded. NU ran off to the locker room with a 29-26 lead.
However, the Huskies, playing less than 48 hours after their 67-47 win at Delaware, were unable to sustain that momentum, and Hofstra took advantage.
The Huskies look to rebound Wednesday when they host the George Mason Patriots at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be televised in the Mid-Atlantic region on MASN.
