Huskies improve to 10-1 in CAA with win over Delaware

Matt Janning and Manny Adako scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, to lead the Northeastern men's basketball team to a 73-59 win over Delaware Saturday at Matthews Arena.

The win improves Northeastern's record to 15-6, 10-1 in the CAA as the Huskies maintain a one-game lead in the conference. The win was the Huskies' ninth straight over the Blue Hens, all coming since the start of the 2005-06 season. The Huskies also completed January with a record of 9-1, their best calendar month since going 11-0 in January of 1987.

Janning had another excellent shooting day, going 7-for-14 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range. Adako also was solid as usual, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor. He also was near perfect from the free throw line, making 7-of-8 shots. The Huskies as a team shot 49 percent from the field and hit a season-high 11 three-pointers.

The first half started sluggish for both teams with a lot of missed three-point shots. There were 11 three-point attempts in the first 6:14 of the game. The Blue Hens went ahead 16-10 at 9:51 when Marc Egerson drained a three-pointer off a pass from Brian Johnson.

The Huskies took the lead at 6:53 when Baptiste Bataille drove towards the basket on the left side, stopped and spun around, tossing a pass across court to a wide-open Matt Smith, who connected from downtown, putting NU up 19-18. Delaware grabbed the lead back on the next possession after an Adam Pegg layup, but Northeastern then grabbed the lead for good as Chris Alvarez dished to Adako inside for the layup at 5:42.

That sparked a 13-0 Northeastern run that put the Huskies up 32-20. The exclamation point on the run came when Alvarez stole the ball from Jawan Carter, and Janning then took an off-balance, fadeaway jumper with Alphonso Dawson in his face. Dawson was called for a foul as the basket went in. At 2:36, Janning hit the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Huskies went into halftime up 32-22.

Egerson tried to get Delaware back into it by scoring seven points in the first 3:39 of the second half, but the Huskies went on a 12-0 run from 15:22 to 13:21 to up the advantage to 20 points, 51-31. Northeastern was knocking down three-pointers left and right. Chaisson Allen, who finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, made a three to start the run. Janning then scored a triple after Alvarez dribbled into the lane and kicked the ball back out. Janning followed that with another three that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Allen finished the run with a three-point play on a foul by Dawson.

After Jim Ledsome made a basket to end UD's scoreless streak, the Huskies went right back to the three as Adako drove towards the basket and then kicked the ball back out to Smith, who made another three. Northeastern went up 54-33. The Huskies would go up by as much as 23 after three-pointers from Allen Aragbaye and Eugene Spates.

Delaware managed to get the deficit down to 12 points with a 12-3 run, as Egerson made a layup at 2:22 to make it 69-57. However, it was too little, too late as the Blue Hens missed their final four shots.

Egerson finished with a game-high 26 points, 16 in the second half to lead Delaware, which shot 37 percent for the game.

Northeastern next plays at William & Mary on Wednesday in Williamsburg, Va., at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.
