Huskies roll past Georgia State, 68-54

The Northeastern men's basketball team had four players score in double digits and held Georgia State to 39 percent shooting as the Huskies remained undefeated in conference play with a 68-54 win over the Panthers Wednesday night at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta.

The Huskies have now won three straight and six of their last seven games, improving to 4-0 in the CAA, one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the conference. The Panthers fell to 4-11, 2-2 in the CAA.

Chaisson Allen led the Huskies with 14 points and added eight rebounds. Matt Janning recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He also had five assists. Manny Adako and Eugene Spates each had 13 points.

The Huskies got off to a fast start scoring 12 of the game's first 17 points en route to a 31-10 run. Allen had a key basket with a running layup at 15:30. He was also fouled on the play and converted the free throw, giving the Huskies the early 12-5 lead.

Adako, who hails from nearby Decatur, Ga., got into the scoring with jumpers at 14:18 and 12:53 to extend the NU lead to 10, 18-8. Adako's second basket started a 15-3 Huskies run that opened the game up. Spates followed with a three-pointer with a hand in his face, drawing a foul. He missed the free throw, but the Huskies were up 21-8 at the 11:50 mark.

Janning dropped in a couple of baskets, including a long three-pointer at 9:30 to make it 28-10. Allen then punctuated the start with a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down, giving NU a 21-point lead, 31-10, with 8:38 to play.

However, the Huskies fell into a lull the final eight minutes of the half, going scoreless and missing their last nine shots. Georgia State did not fully capitalize, but did enough to get back into the game, going on an 8-0 run. The half ended with Northeastern in front 31-18.

Depsite the poor end to the half, the Huskies did shoot 50 percent (13-for-26), including 44 percent (4-for-9) from behind the arc.

Adako made sure the scoreless streak didn't last, hitting a layup 15 seconds into the second half. However, Georgia State stayed with the Huskies, keeping the deficit within reason for most of the second half. The Panthers closed to within eight points, 52-44, but the Huskies grabbed momentum again when Matt Smith drained his third three-pointer of the second half at 7:28. After Joe Dukes hit a layup for the Panthers, Allen came up big when he grabbed a rebound off his own missed three and took the ball to the hoop uncontested at 5:35 to make it 59-46 in favor of the Huskies.

The Panthers threatened once more, but Allen put the game away with a big layup under the basket after Adako grabbed an offensive rebound from a Smith three-point miss, putting NU up 64-50 with 2:15 left.

Smith finished with nine points and Ojougboh had eight points and eight rebounds as the Huskies managed a balanced offensive attack. For the second straight game, the Huskies also dominated on the glass, outrebounding GSU 36-27.

Dukes led Georgia State with 17 points. He scored the Panthers' first eight points of the game.

As a team, Northeastern shot 53.8 percent from the field, but only got to the foul line seven times, making just four of them.

Northeastern returns home for a Saturday afternoon tilt against Towson at Matthews Arena at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet New England.
