The Northeastern University men's basketball team dropped a 68-63 decision at William & Mary Wednesday night in Williamsburg, Va., after the Tribe shot 47.8 percent for the game.
The Huskies fall to 15-7, 10-2 in the CAA as their four-game winning streak was snapped. The Huskies have still won 12 of their last 15 games, and with VCU's loss tonight, they still hold a one-game lead in the CAA.
The first half saw both teams shoot well overall, but miss most of the three-point attempts. The Tribe took an early 10-5 lead after Quinn McDowell's three-pointer at 15:04. He scored five of the Tribe's first 10 points. The Huskies got back into with Eugene Spates' three-pointer, tying the game at 12-12.
Matt Janning then gave Northeastern its first lead when he paced up the court and drained a pull-up three-pointer, making it 15-12 in favor of the Huskies.
That sparked a 17-6 run for Northeastern. The Huskies took a 24-18 lead after Manny Adako's baby hook at 5:58. However, the Tribe answered back with a 10-2 run to end the half. The Huskies were 1-for-7 from the field to end the half while the Tribe were 5-for-6. McDowell beat the halftime buzzer with a reverse layup over two Huskies to go into the break with a 28-26 lead.
In the second half, William & Mary took a 46-33 lead as the Tribe drained three from downtown before the first media timeout. Meanwhile, the Huskies struggled from the outside, missing their four first three-pointers in the second half.
After McDowell's free throws at 11:58 gave William & Mary its 13-point advantage, the Huskies woke up by scoring 17 of game's next 24 points. Northeastern finally started making its threes as Chaisson Allen nailed one at 11:24 and another at 8:38. In between those, Baptiste Bataille drilled home a trey at 10:02. Bataille had seven points during the run. His layup at 7:46 cut the Tribe's lead to five, 53-48, and his pair of free throws got NU to within three, 53-50, with 6:45 to play.
William & Mary immediately rebounded with a three from David Schneider though to cool Northeastern off. The Tribe went back up by nine, 61-52, with 1:19 left in the game, but the Huskies fought back again with the help of Janning, who had a three-point play after a dunk and a foul at 0:56 to make it 62-57. After Sean McCurdy missed four free throws on back-to-back possessions, Janning then drove to the hoop for a layup to get within three again, 62-59, with 33 seconds on the clock.
However, Northeastern was unable to get a turnover and William & Mary made its free throws from then after.
Allen led the Huskies with 12 points. Janning and Adako each added 10. The Huskies attempted a season-high 26 three-pointers, making just seven of them. The defense suffered a letdown, allowing the Tribe to shoot 22-for-46 from the field, including 10-for-20 in the second half.
McDowell had 19 points to lead William & Mary. Schneider added 18.
The Huskies return home for a Saturday afternoon tilt against UNC Wilmington at Matthews Arena at 1 p.m.
