Huskies topped by UMass on late goal

Box ScoreBox Score

The men's soccer team lost another close one, 1-0 to the Massachusetts Minutemen Saturday at Parsons Field. For the second straight game, the Huskies outshot their opponent in the loss.

Northeastern's defense shined in the first half, allowing the Minutemen just three shots and none on goal. The Huskies got off seven in the period, including a shot that was just wide from eight yards out by sophomore midfielder Josh Semerene. Senior co-captain Lars Okland led the strong effort from the backfield but was helped out by solid play from junior co-captain Matt Sanford and junior Santiago Bedoya.

As the second half began scoreless the defense continued to be strong on both sides. Sophomore Mike Kennedy was impressive as he battled the shifty Minutemen defense, getting off three shots and setting up numerous other chances. Although UMass goalkeeper Chris Piekos was forced to make just four saves on the day, he was a strong presence in the net.

The minutemen offense struggled at the start against a seasoned Huskies defense. Despite no shots on goal until the 66th minute, Massachusetts stayed strong and was able to capitalize on a chance in the 84th minute. As the Northeastern defense attempted to clear the ball, junior midfielder Ben Arikian was able to connect and put one past freshman goalkeeper Michael Gallagher. The Huskies gave themselves a good chance to tie with two shots on goal in the final five minutes but two saves from Piekos felled the drive.

"It was another tough effort with an unfortunate result," said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough. "We need to find a way to get the ball in the net."

Although NU has struggled to find the net, strong defense has kept them in every game. The Huskies have not trailed by more than one goal all season.

The Huskies will wrap up a three-game homestand as they host Fairfield, Tuesday Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. at Parsons Field.
