The Northeastern Huskies dropped the first game on their CAA slate to Old Dominion, 3-1 on Friday at Powhatan Complex. Sophomore
Carolyn Malloy scored her third goal of the season in the game's waning moments for the Huskies. Northeastern falls to 4-4 on the season with the defeat.
Old Dominion senior Katie Ueberroth took over the game in the first half with three assists, two off penalty corners, to give Old Dominion a commanding 3-0 at the half. Malloy secured a consolation with 1:01 remaining in the game to cut the deficit to two, but it was the closest the Huskies would get.
Ueberroth set up sophomore Rachel Stream for her fourth goal of the season at the 11:30 mark of the first half to give ODU the lead. Senior Hanna Warren also earned an assist on the goal, which occurred on a penalty corner.
The Lady Monarchs replicated the play 11 minutes later. Ueberroth took a pass from Hanna off another corner, and set the ball up for junior Loran Hatch, who blasted it past Husky keeper
Lizzie Priest for the 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Kathryn Kirk made it 3-0 just before the half. Taking a pass from Ueberroth along the endline, Kirk beat keeper Samantha Sewell, who entered the game for Priest with nine minutes remaining in the first half.
CAA Rookie of the Week Nicola Graham set up the lone Husky goal, feeding Malloy on a fast break to foil ODU keeper Kelly Driscoll's bid for the shutout.
Sewell made four saves on five shots for the Huskies, playing in her first game of the 2009 season.
The Huskies return to action Sunday against William & Mary at 11 a.m.
