Huskies defeat Clemson 2-1 in Nike Invitational

Box Score BOXSCORE

Freshman forward Devin Petta scored both goals for Northeastern in its victory over Clemson, on Friday. The game was the first of the Nike Invitational, hosted by Georgia, and the win was Northeastern's first against an ACC opponent.

The first 45 minutes of the match were scoreless, with both teams sitting even at five shots a side. The second half was Northeastern's though, as Petta netted a header in the 51st minute off of a Greta Samuelsdottir cross from the right side. Only 13 minutes later, Petta put the Huskies up 2-0 on another cross from the right side, this time from Liza Rebello. Clemson came back firing, with a total of 11 shots in the second half, and eventually put one past keeper Stephanie Gordon in the 80th minute. The goal ended Gordon's consecutive shutout streak at 240:47.

In the end, the Huskies held on to prevail, with the final score 2-1. Gordon recorded a total eight saves and Petta's two goals totaled her at four in just three games this season. Petta is just the second NU player ever in program history to score four goals in the team's first three games. Tanya Mello (in 2000) is the only other Huskies player to accomplish the feat. Mello, too, was a freshman that season.

Northeastern also saw the return of All-American sophomore Veronica Napoli, who missed the first two games of the season due to injury.

Next game, the Huskies will face off against SEC opponent and tournament host Georgia, Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
