The Northeastern women's soccer team fell in a closely contested match on Friday at Old Dominion, 2-1.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to 7-6-1 on the year and 2-4-1 in CAA play.
The Huskies opened the contest strong, firing the match's first two shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs were able to respond however, as Kelly Evans fed Victoria Johnson in front of an open net for her third goal of the season to put Old Dominion up in the 13th minute.
Later in the first half the Huskies responded, as junior
Veronica Napoli fed a cross to senior co-captain
Kristen Blake who beat the keeper for the equalizer in the 30th minute. The goal was Blake's second of the year.
The contest would head to intermission deadlocked at one. The Huskies best chance late in the first half came on a corner kick from junior
Erin McGaffigan, but nothing came of the chance.
McGaffigan would also fire the Huskies first shot on goal of the second half, but Old Dominion keeper Brianna Alvarado stopped her blast.
Evans and Johnson were able to connect again for the Lady Monarchs in the 62nd minute, giving the Lady Monarchs a 2-1 lead they would hold onto. Johnson was able to tuck the game-winning shot just inside the left post.
Junior
Kelly Matthews attempted to immediately respond, but Alavardo was again there for the save. Napoli would test Alavardo again the 69th minute, but the keeper was up to the task.
Senior
Sarah Fylak started in goal for the Huskies and recorded six saves, while her record fell to 0-3 on the year. Alavardo made five saves for the Lady Monarchs in the victory.
Northeastern looks to get back on track on Sunday when they travel to William & Mary. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
