Utah State holds off Huskies, 56-54

Junior forward Brady Jardine tallied a double-double to lift Utah State to a 56-54 win over Northeastern in men's basketball action on Saturday night at Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah. Senior guard Chaisson Allen led the Huskies (2-2) with 18 points and seven assists.

Jardine recorded 15 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for the Aggies (4-1) and was joined in double figures by senior forward Tai Wesley with 14 points and junior guard Brockeith Pane with 13 points. Senior guard Tyler Newbold dished four assists.

Sophomore guard Joel Smith scored 15 points for the Huskies, all on three-pointers as he went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. The Huskies were 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from three-point land, while the Aggies shot just 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Kauri Black led Northeastern with seven rebounds.

The Huskies took an early 5-3 lead when Smith drained a 3-pointer, but the Aggies scored eight unanswered points before sophomore Dinko Marshavelski, who matched his career high with four points, hit a jumper and classmate Jonathan Lee sank a three to bring Northeastern back within one.

Smith hit another three to tie the game at 14-14 with 9:44 to go in the first half. A 6-1 spurt put Utah State up by five when Jardine hit a jumper. After Jardine made a free throw, rookie forward Alex Bates tied the game with his first collegiate points on a jumper for the Huskies.

Pane hit a field goal for Utah State, but Lee answered with a three to give the Huskies a 24-23 lead with 1:45 left in the first half. Senior guard Brian Green scored a three for the Aggies before Allen made two free throws with 29 seconds left to level the score at 26-26 for halftime.

The Huskies opened the second half on an 8-2 run, beginning with a three-point play by Allen. After the Aggies came back within one with five unanswered points, Alwayne Bigby and Smith both drilled threes to give Northeastern a seven-point lead.

The Aggies battled back and took a 49-48 lead with 3:07 to go when Wesley hit a pair of free throws before Allen hit a free throw to tie the game at 49-49. Smith knocked down his fifth three of the game to put the Huskies back on top and a Wesley dunk brought the Aggies within one with 1:51 to go. Jardine followed with a layup to put Utah State up, 52-51, with 1:16 left.

A pair of free throws by Green gave the Aggies a three-point lead before Allen's layup made it a one-point game with 18.4 seconds to go. Pane hit one of two free throws to give the Aggies a two-point lead with 1.9 seconds left and put the game away.

Northeastern shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the field, just better than Utah State's 38.0 percent (19-of-50) clip, and the Huskies held a 36-34 edge in rebounds.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday against Providence at 7 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
