Schelling shines, but No. 10 Huskies lose, 3-0, at No. 5 BU

BOSTON, Mass. – Florence Schelling made 37 saves, but the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 5 Boston University Terriers at Walter Brown Arena on Wednesday night.

The Huskies' junior netminder was sharp despite giving up three goals, and she earned the third star of the game for her efforts. She made double-digit saves in each period, including 14 in the third.

Schelling was equally as busy in the first frame, as she turned aside 13 Terrier shots. The Huskies had two power play opportunities, but the Terrier penalty kill preserved the scoreless draw. BU goaltender Kerrin Sperry (23 saves) stopped all 10 Husky chances.

The Terriers capitalized on their second power play of the night at the 13:19 mark of the second stanza when Holly Lorms positioned herself in front of Schelling and tipped home a Kasey Boucher shot for the 1-0 lead. It was the first goal Schelling allowed in 95:22 minutes.

Marie-Philip Poulin extended the Terrier lead to 2-0 when she streaked into the offensive end and split the Husky defense to slip a backhander past Schelling for her 13th goal of the season. The goal came at the 4:03 mark of the third period.

Jenn Wakefield closed the scoring for BU at the 16:11 juncture of the third period when she ripped a shot past Schelling, who, seconds earlier, lost her stick making a save. Wakefield led all shooters with 11 shots on goal.

Casey Pickett led Northeastern with seven shots on goal. The Huskies also stayed disciplined, as they skated to the penalty box just twice.

The Huskies have the rest of December off before they kick off 2011 with a pair of games in St. Cloud, Minn. A date with No. 2 Wisconsin on New Years Day precedes a clash with St. Cloud State on Jan. 2.
