The No. 8/9 Northeastern Huskies (16-7-6, 8-5-5-4 HEA) fell in a shootout at Boston University, 1-0, after a 2-2 tie at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday. Freshman Brittany Esposito and senior Lindsay Berman scored for the Huskies, while junior goaltender Leah Sulyma stopped 34 shots and two of three shootout attempts.

The Huskies remain tied for second place in the Hockey East standings with Connecticut and New Hampshire at 24 points. The Terriers sit fifth with 22 points, while Providence continues to lead the conference with 26.

Northeastern opened the scoring at 4:37 of the second period on a four-on-four situation. Freshman Rachel Llanes was able to poke the puck free along the left boards to Esposito, who skated in on goal and picked out the short-side corner of the net to give NU the lead. It was Esposito's third goal vs. the Terriers in as many games, while Llanes recorded her fourth-career point vs. BU.

The Terriers quickly responded with two goals over the next 10 minutes. Off a Northeastern giveaway in its own zone, freshman Jill Cardella spotted junior Lauren Cherewyk open in front for the equalizer at 8:32. Cardella and Cherewyk then proceeded to assist senior Melissa Anderson on the go-ahead tally at 14:19. Sulyma made the initial save on Anderson, but could not corral the rebound as Anderson slammed it home for the 2-1 lead.

The Huskies evened things up early in the third. Freshman Kelly Wallace won a battle behind the BU net and spotted Berman open to the left of the cage. Berman took the feed and pushed the puck through the pads of BU netminder Melissa Haber to make it 2-2 just 1:19 into the frame.

The Huskies' defense made sure it stayed that way late in the period, making two huge plays around the Northeastern net. Off a rebound in front of Sulyma, Anderson appeared to have a gaping net to shoot at, but a last-ditch stick-check from senior Katy Applin knocked the puck free and out of harm's way. Only moments later, Berman cleared the puck off the goal line after a shot dribbled through the pads of Sulyma following a scrum in front.

After a fruitless overtime session, the teams engaged in a shootout for the third time this season. Freshman Casey Pickett backhanded an attempt off the crossbar after Sulyma had denied Anderson to keep the shootout scoreless. Holly Lorms shot next for BU and slid a backhand through the five-hole of a lunging Sulyma to give the Terriers the advantage. Haber proceeded to stone Llanes' shot, before Cardella clanged her attempt off iron to keep the Huskies alive. Junior Alyssa Wohlfeiler tried to extend the competition, but her shifty move was snuffed out by the left skate of Haber to preserve the shootout win for BU.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Sunday against Boston University at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m.
