Matt Janning scored a game-high and season-high 26 points to lift the Northeastern University men's basketball team to a thrilling 74-71 double overtime victory over the Hofstra Pride in the quarterfinals of the CAA Championship Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.
The No. 2 seed Huskies advance to the semifinals Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. against No. 3 William & Mary. The other semifinal will pit No. 1 seed Old Dominion against No. 5 VCU at 3 p.m. This is Northeastern's first semifinal appearance since 2006.
The contest was the first double overtime game in the CAA Championship since 1999. Northeastern (20-11) shot 40.4 percent for the game and 71 percent (22-for-31) from the free throw line. In addition to Janning's 26,
Manny Adako had 13 points.
Nkem Ojougboh had nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Kauri Black had his best game of the season with nine points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.
Hofstra (19-14) was led by Charles Jenkins, who had 24 points and eight rebounds. The Pride shot 36.5 percent for the game and outrebounded the Huskies 47-43. Hofstra had 20 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points.
After Jenkins made one of two free throws at the 2:22 mark of the second half, the Huskies trailed by four 52-48. But Northeastern fought back on the legs of Janning, who grabbed a rebound and ran the length of the court and connected on a reverse layup to get the team within two, 52-50, with 1:26 to play.
Hofstra tried to ice the game with a three, but Cornelius Vines missed, but the Pride grabbed the rebound. Jenkins tried to drive and dish, but his pass landed in Janning's arms, giving the Huskies life. Janning looked to the drive to the hoop, got to the free throw line and then dumped off to a waiting Black, who nailed the open layup and tied the game at 52-52. Jenkins missed a buzzer-beating three, forcing overtime.
At the start of the first overtime, Hofstra went up 55-52, but Janning immediately tied it with a bomb three in Jenkins' face. The Huskies went on to go up 60-57, but Vines tied the game with 14 seconds remaining on a three-pointer. NU had 10 seconds to get a shot off, but didn't get a clean look.
In double overtime, Janning hit three of four free throws to put Northeastern on top 65-62, but the Pride got right back into it with a Greg Washington dunk. After an NU miss, Jenkins drew a foul, but hit only one of two free throws, leaving it at a 65-65 tie with 1:50 left. NU took a lead on a pair of Black free throws, but Jenkins answered with another bucket at 1:09.
Janning then made the play of the game by drilling another three-pointer with another hand in his face, putting the Huskies ahead by three, 70-67, with 45 seconds remaining. In desperation, Washington tried a three, but Adako blocked it, Ojougboh got the rebound and
Chaisson Allen drew a foul. Allen made both free throws to go up five, Hofstra cut it to three, Allen made one of two free throws to go up four, Hofstra again hit a layup to get within two, but Allen made another free throw with 3.1 seconds left, missed the second and Hofstra couldn't get a shot off after struggling for the offensive rebound.
Northeastern, which has its first 20-win season since 2004-05, will play William & Mary Sunday at 5:30 p.m., and it will be televised live on the Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet New England.
