The Northeastern women's soccer team fell to No. 12 South Carolina, 3-0, in its season opener on Sunday at Parsons Field.

South Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Gabrielle Gilbert in the 11th minute and Ali Glemser in the 33rd minute. Gilbert's goal was scored off a Kayla Grimsley rebound.

Despite controlling possession for a good portion of the second half, the Huskies were unable to mount any significant offense to break through the South Carolina defense.

Northeastern's best chance came on a shot midway through the first half from senior midfielder Kristen Blake, which was stopped with a diving save by USC keeper Mollie Patton.

A late rally from Northeastern in the second half was stifled by an own goal in the 82nd minute, putting the Gamecocks up three late in the second half.

Sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir led the Huskies with 3 shots, while Blake and sophomore Devin Petta added two apiece. Petta was double and triple teamed by the Gamecocks defenders throughout the contest.

Senior Sarah Fylak started the first 84 minutes in net for the Huskies and recorded seven saves. Sophomore Megan Penn came in relief for the final six minutes and didn't face a shot.

Mollie Patton started in goal for South Carolina, and saved all eight shots she saw. The shutout was her second of the season and the 24th of her career.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 0-1-0 in 2010. The Gamecocks move to 2-0-0.

The Huskies return to action Friday, Aug. 27 at Bryant.
