The Northeastern women's soccer team completed a Rhode Island weekend sweep on Sunday, defeating Rhode Island, 2-1, in Kingston, R.I.

The win marks NU's second straight in the Ocean State, and moves them to 2-1 on the season. URI falls to 0-2-1.

Rhode Island's Kaylen Shimoda sent early shockwaves with a goal in the second minute of the match, but Northeastern didn't let the early marker spoil the game's outcome.

The Huskies rallied late in the first half, as junior forward Veronica Napoli netted an equalizer in the 32nd minute.  Napoli's goal came on a direct kick from 30 yards out.

It took just six minutes for the Huskies to strike again, as sophomore forward Greta Samuelsdottir received a cross from junior Laura Holmstedt and beat URI keeper Sasha Rieber for her second goal of the season.

Samuelsdottir's goal stood as the game winner after a defensive struggle in the second half. The second half saw both the Huskies and the Rams take five shots, but neither was able to put one past the opposing keeper. The teams combined for 15 fouls in the second half.

Sophomore Michelle Sopko started in net for the Huskies, and saved five shots. Rieber started for URI and recorded three saves.

The win marks the first time the Huskies have defeated Rhode Island. They are now 1-3 all-time against the Rams. Sunday was the first contest against URI since 2003.

The Huskies look to ride their two-game winning streak into the Nike Invitational Tournament next week in Hanover, N.H. NU will battle Brown Friday at 4:30 p.m., then take on tournament host Dartmouth next Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
