Senior forward Jamie Skeen scored 18 points and classmate Ed Nixon had 10 points for the Rams (13-5, 5-1), who won their third straight game.

Sophomore forward Kauri Black opened the scoring with a dunk to put the Huskies on the board, but the Rams followed with nine unanswered points, as Burgess tied the score and Skeen gave VCU the lead.

The Huskies got back within two when sophomore guard Jonathan Lee made a steal that Allen dunked on the other end. An 8-0 run followed for the Rams and VCU went up 28-15 when freshman guard Rob Brandenberg drained a three with 4:50 left in the first half.

Northeastern closed the half on a 7-0 run with an Allen layup cutting the VCU lead to 30-22 at halftime.

The Huskies made it a one-possession game in the second half, cutting the lead to 48-46 when Smith knocked down a three with 10:56 to go. The Huskies were within three with three minutes to go, but the Rams followed with a 10-0 run to thwart the Northeastern rally.

The Huskies shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the floor, besting the 50 percent (23-of-46) clip the Rams shot, but VCU held a 28-19 advantage on the boards and the Rams grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, leading to 14 second-chance points.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, visiting Delaware for a 7 p.m. CAA matchup in Newark, Del.
