Men's soccer battles to tie with UNC Wilmington, 1-1

Box Score Box score

Northeastern and the UNC Wilmington Seahawks fought to a 1-1 draw on Saturday in North Carolina.

The first half played out scoreless, as both teams tried to gain a foothold in the game. Northeastern and UNCW only generated two shots on goal a piece in the opening stanza, making for light work for Oliver Blum and Brandon Miller. The Huskies' best chance of the opening 45 minutes came 10 minutes into the contest, when Ricardo McDonald put a shot on goal that Miller handled effectively.

The game moved into the second half and the Seahawks began to apply more pressure, with two shots saved by Blum in the 55th minute. Their continued pressure paid off in the 67th minute when Jack Ward scored the breakthrough goal, his first tally of the year. Ward beat a Husky defender on the left side of the box and ripped a shot past Blum and just inside the far post to put UNCW ahead.

Northeastern responded well to going behind however, and answered back in the 74th minute. Ryan Burnham, who scored the eventual game-wining goal against Georgia State on Oct. 8, came up big again for Northeastern with his second goal of the year. The senior co-captain collected a loose ball following a Husky corner kick and tried his luck, beatingthe  Seahawk defense and Miller in net to pull Northeastern level.

Neither team could find a winning goal in the remaining 16 minutes, so the match headed into overtime, marking Northeastern's third overtime contest of the year. The extra time played out the same way as the 90 minutes of regular time, with both teams trading opportunities, but no one able to find the decisive goal.

With the tie, the Huskies go to 7-4-2 (3-2-1 CAA) and the Seahawks move to 3-9-1 (1-5-1 CAA). Northeastern is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Towson. The scheduled start time for that contest is 6 p.m.
