Northeastern women's soccer was edged by the VCU Rams, 1-0, in the CAA semifinals on Friday night in Williamsburg, Va.

The two teams played a fairly even first half.

Northeastern had a scare five minutes into the match when the ball deflected off a Husky defender and into the unexpecting arms of goalkeeper Paige Burnett.

At the 19:40 mark, Northeastern nearly took the lead on a developing rush.

Senior Veronica Napoli made a slick turn at the top of the box and dealt the ball to forward Greta Samuelsdottir. Samuelsdottir sliced a shot from the far right side of the box that rolled and hit the post.

The Rams made a push near the end of the first half, highlighted when midfielder Taryn Cressy took a shot that curved and missed just wide left from about 15 yards out. Burnett was able to keep another two VCU shots out of the net and the teams entered the half scoreless.

VCU outshot Northeastern in the first half eight to five.

The Rams took the lead at the 41:31 mark of the second half on their fourth straight corner. Cristin Granados assisted on the goal by Meaghan Dullea. VCU continued to apply heavy pressure following the tally, pushing the Northeastern defense towards its own goal.

VCU nearly took a 2-0 lead when Maren Johansen curved a shot from the left side off the post from 20 yards out. The Rams then nearly took a two-goal lead again a few minutes later when Courtney Conrad had an open net shot blocked by Northeastern defender Laura Holmstedt.

The Rams controlled the pace throughout the remainder of the second half, while Northeastern showed clear signs of fatigue from their double overtime match the day before.

Northeastern finishes the year at 9-10-2 overall.

Burnett and Napoli were both selected to the All Tournament Team.
