The Northeastern Black defeated the Northeastern Red, 61-53, in the annual Red-Black Game on Monday night at Solomon Court. The intra-squad scrimmage provided fans with a final preview before Friday's season-opening game at crosstown rival Boston University.
The Black team's
Kashief Edwards led all scorers with 19 points. Edwards was one of four members of the Black squad to score in double figures. Junior co-captain
Jonathan Lee finished with 16, and freshmen
Quincy Ford and
Demetrius Pollard contributed 12 and 10, respectively. Sophomore
Alwayne Bigby led the Red team with 16 points, followed by junior
Kauri Black with 13. Freshman
Reggie Spencer, of the Black team, was the game's leading rebounder with 10.
Edwards opened the scoring for the Black team with a dunk just over a minute into the game. The Red team quickly responded on a dunk by
Ryan Pierson, an All-CAA selection from a season ago. Pierson's dunk sparked an 11-2 run by Red, during which all five Red players scored.
Freshman and Boston-native
Marco Banegas-Flores drained a three-pointer off an assist from
Alwayne Bigby. A free throw by
Kauri Black and a layup by Bigby sandwiched a tip-in from Black's
Reggie Spencer to make the score 8-4 in favor of Red. After a series of traded possessions,
Ryan Pierson resumed the scoring for Red with a made jumper, and
Kauri Black scored off a Bigby pass as the Red team pushed its advantage to seven at 11-4.
Freshman
Demetrius Pollard knocked down a three to spark a 7-2 run by the Black team. Fellow freshmen
Reggie Spencer and
Quincy Ford each scored during the run.
A three-pointer by junior co-captain
Joel Smith and a free throw by
Kauri Black pushed the lead back to six for the Red, 17-11, before an Edwards tip-in and a Pollard three narrowed the margin to just one, 17-16.
Free throws by Pierson and another three by Smith pushed the Red lead back to six. Two Black baskets from Ford cut the lead to two, before
Kauri Black converted a traditional three-point play, giving Red a five-point advantage at 25-20.
A
Jonathan Lee three sparked a seven-point run by Black, giving that squad its first lead, 27-25, since the game's opening basket. Edwards scored the remaining four points during the run. A Red free throw by Pierson was quickly followed by a layup from Black's Ford to push the margin to three.
Bigby came up big for the Red team in the half's closing moments. The sophomore converted a free throw with three seconds remaining, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and drained a three as time expired, giving Red a 30-29 halftime advantage.
Black again was quick out of the gate, scoring nine of the second half's first 11 points. A Pollard jumper and two free throws from Edwards opened the scoring. A layup from Red's Pierson briefly slowed the momentum, before a Lee three and two more Edwards free throws pushed the Black lead to six, at 38-32. It was a lead the squad would never relinquish.
A tip-in by
Kauri Black for the Red team was followed by another Lee basket and a jumper by Pollard, building the margin to eight.
Five-straight points by Red's Bigby--on a layup and a three--closed the gap to three, before a Lee free throw and back-to-back baskets from Ford gave the Black team another eight point cushion, at 47-39. Freshman
Devin Figueroa scored for the Red team to stop the run, and Lee and Bibgy each traded baskets to set the score at 49-43, heading into a timeout.
The Black squad scored the first five points out of the timeout to push the advantage to double digits. Lee, an All-CAA preseason honoree, had a hand in all five points. The Flint, Mich., native converted a free throw and a jumper before providing the assist on an Edwards dunk.
Kauri Black converted a dunk of his own to cut the margin to single digits, but two Lee free throws quickly put the Black team back up by 11 (56-45).
A layup by sophomore
Chris Avenant and a three-pointer by Bigby gave the Red team life with just under a minute to play. Smith also drained a three in the game's closing moments, but five points from Edwards, on two dunks and a free throw, secured the victory for the Black squad, 61-53.
Northeastern will open the season on Friday evening, Nov. 11, when it travels to Boston University. Game time at Chase Gym is set for 5 p.m. The Huskies defeated the Terriers, 66-64, in last season's opener at Matthews Arena.
