Game Highlights
BOSTON, Mass., Dec. 3, 2011 -- Playing in its conference opener, the Northeastern men's basketball team fell to CAA foe Old Dominion, 69-59, at Matthews Arena on Saturday. Despite leading early in the second half, the Huskies fell victim to a 12-0 Monarch scoring run mid-way through the period, which put the game out of reach for the home side. Freshman
Quincy Ford led Northeastern with 13 second-half points and finished the contest with a career-high 16 points and five rebounds. With the loss, the Huskies are now 3-3 (0-1) on the season.
NCAA tournament participants a season ago, the Monarchs (5-3, 1-0) were led by senior Kent Bazemore, who tallied 21 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Held to just three points in the first half, Northeastern's leading scorer,
Jonathan Lee, opened the second half with a three-pointer to tie the game at 34-34. A
Quincy Ford put-back dunk with 15:32 remaining gave the Huskies their first lead since the opening seven minutes of the game at 40-38, but the Monarchs answered quickly. A Nick Wright trey just over a minute later sparked a 12-0 run, putting the road side ahead 50-40 at the 9:35 mark before a Ford basket ended the nearly-six-minute Husky scoring drought.
Ford continued his solid second half effort with another bucket, putting Northeastern to within five at 57-52 with just under five minutes to play. That's as close as the home team would come however, as Old Dominion outscored the Huskies 12-7 the rest of the way.
Competing in their first true road game of the year, Old Dominion shot just 36 percent (19-53) from the field but took advantage of 27-of-34 shooting from the free-throw line to come away victorious.
Northeastern outshot the Monarchs overall, converting 43 percent (21-49) of their shots from the field but struggled from behind the arc. The Huskies finished the game four-of-18 from three-point territory. Northeastern connected on 81 percent of its free throw attempts (13-16).
After trailing for most of the first half, a Husky three-pointer from Joe Smith knotted the game at 27-27 after the first 17 minutes of play. ODU's Trian Iliadis capped the opening 20 minutes with a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, putting the Monarchs ahead, 34-31 at halftime.
Kauri Black led Northeastern with six points, while Kent Bazemore paced Old Dominion with 11 points at the break.
Northeastern will now head to Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., to take on the Braves at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec 3 at Carver Arena.
