Box Score | Hockey East Interview - Florence Schelling | Hockey East Interview - Alyssa Wohlfeiler
Florence Schelling set a Hockey East tournament record with 44 saves, including a record 24 in the first period, to pace the Huskies past No. 1 seed Boston University, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
The Huskies will play in the WHEA title game for the first time in program history against the winner of the second semifinal between Boston College and Providence.
Alyssa Wohlfeiler tallied two goals and
Claire Santostefano potted the game-winning goal just 1:13 into the final frame.
Schelling stole the show in the first period, as she set a Hockey East tournament record by making 24 saves in a single period.
The saves weren't easy, as right off the bat Schelling stoned Holly Lorms twice at the top of the crease. The save of the period came during the Huskies' first power play chance of the contest. Jenn Wakefield had a breakaway, but as she cut across the top of the crease and fired off a shot, Schelling held the right post and made a fantastic right pad save.
Despite the great goaltending, the Terriers struck first at the 15:56 mark of the opening frame. Wakefield took a pass from Louise Warren and slid it past Schelling for the 1-0 advantage. It was Wakefield's 29th goal of the season.
Northeastern came out strong to start the second period and carried the play early in the stanza. The strong effort produced a goal at the 10:18 mark after a pretty pass from
Casey Pickett.
Maggie DiMasi made a great outlet pass to Pickett who got the puck in the Terrier zone. Pickett remained poised and spun around with the puck to evade a defender. Her patience paid off as she saw Wohlfeiler streak up the left wing and fed the puck to the senior forward, who deposited the puck past Kerrin Sperry (21 saves) to bring NU to level terms.
The Huskies took their first lead against BU this season at the 14:45 mark when
Rachel Llanes won an offensive zone draw straight back to
Julia Marty. The senior co-captain one-timed the puck past Sperry to put Northeastern ahead, 2-1. It was Marty's fifth goal of the season and Llanes earned her 19th assist of the season.
BU made it 2-2 at the 17:50 juncture of the second. Kaleigh Fratkin worked the puck to the point where Catherine Ward slid it between the dots to Wakefield. The junior forward then faked a shot and deposited the puck into an open net for her 30th goal of the season and second of the contest.
It took just 1:13 of the third frame for Northeastern to regain the lead for good. Freshman forward
Katie MacSorley carried the puck in the Terrier zone and, after finding open space between the hash marks, she fired a shot that Sperry saved. The puck popped up in the air, and Santostefano was there to bat it home for the 3-2 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for Santostefano and the sixth assist of the season for MacSorley.
The Terriers brought plenty of pressure to try and tie the game, but Schelling stood tall each time she was tested. She made the save of the game on a fellow Olympian, as Schelling, a Swiss Olympian, made a glove save to rob Canadian Olympian Marie-Philip Poulin on the doorstep. It was one of 15 saves in the third period for Schelling.
Wohlfeiler gave NU some insurance with a pretty goal at the 13:09 juncture of the third, as she faked a pass and lifted a backhander that beat Sperry for the 4-2 lead. Pickett and DiMasi, like on Wohlfeiler's first goal, added the assists.
BU pulled Sperry in favor of the extra attacker with 2:16 remaining in regulation, but the Husky defense, in conjunction with Schelling, kept the Terriers at bay and secured the victory.
Northeastern will look to carry the momentum from Saturday's win into the championship game on Sunday. The Huskies will face either Boston College or Providence at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be televised on tape delay at 4 p.m. on NESN.
For fans that wish to attend Sunday's championship contest, a fan bus will depart from Chicken Lou's at 12 p.m. There are limited spots on the bus, so it will be first come, first serve.
Game Notes:
Florence Schelling stopped 24 shots in the first period, which is one shy of a school record set by
Leah Sulyma in the 2010 Beanpot title game against Harvard. Sulyma stopped 25 Harvard shots in the second period of that contest on Feb. 9, 2010.
Schelling also broke a Hockey East tournament record for both saves in a period and saves in a game. She shattered the previous mark of 18 saves in a period, which was set by Kaitlyn Shain of UConn on March 15, 2003 in the first annual Hockey East semifinal. Shain also set the tournament record for saves in a game in the same contest, as she wound up with 41 saves for the contest.
Five of the point-getters recorded points for the second straight contest.
Casey Pickett registered a multi-point game for the second straight contest with two assists on Saturday. She has two goals and three assists for five points in the 2011 postseason. The other four skaters who now own two-game point streaks are
Rachel Llanes,
Katie MacSorley,
Claire Santostefano and
Alyssa Wohlfeiler.
This is the second straight game that
Claire Santostefano and
Katie MacSorley combined for a goal. The pair reversed roles to score the third goal of the game against Connecticut on Feb. 26, as Santostefano assisted on MacSorley's goal. Santostefano's strike was also the third goal of Saturday's game.
Northeastern is 6-0-1 when
Alyssa Wohlfeiler scores a goal.
