Box Score
BOSTON – Casey Pickett extended her point streak to three games with her first period goal, but No. 7 Boston College answered with two goals in the first period and one in the third to win, 3-1, in the Women's Hockey East Championship Game.
Northeastern (16-13-8) received another great effort from
Florence Schelling, as the junior netminder stopped 32 Boston College (23-6-6) shots. Her 76-save effort earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Pickett and senior co-captain
Julia Marty joined Schelling on the squad.
The Huskies struck first after a tenacious effort from Pickett.
Alyssa Wohlfeiler made an outlet pass to Pickett, who streaked up the right wing as the Huskies went off for a line change. Pickett lost the puck for a moment, but then forced a turnover and made a pretty deke to beat Schaus for the 1-0 lead. With the goal, Pickett extended her point streak to three games.
Pickett nearly had a second goal in the first frame when she pounced on a rebound and roofed it just over the crossbar after Wohlfeiler had the initial shot.
The Eagles evened the score at the 12:13 mark of the first. Danielle Welch fired a shot from the slot that slid underneath Schelling's pads and into the net. Ashley Motherwell assisted on Welch's 10th strike of the season.
BC took a 2-1 lead late in the third when Blake Bolden tallied her seventh goal of the season on the power play at the 19:18 mark of the period. It was the first power play goal the Huskies gave up in 16 chances.
Northeastern earned a power play opportunity of its own to begin the second stanza and, despite not converting, the Huskies used it to give them some momentum.
NU controlled play in early portion of middle frame. Sophomore
Siena Falino had the best chance of the period with 13:18 remaining when she came off the left half-wall and put a shot on goal that Schaus saved.
Schelling made the save of the game in the third period when Kelli Stack skated past the defense and in on goal, but Schelling made a tremendous right pad save to keep the game at 2-1.
The Eagles made it 3-1 at the 5:59 mark of the third when Mary Restuccia slid the puck to Taylor Wasylk who potted her 14th goal of the season.
Northeastern battled hard and almost made it 3-2 with 5:00 remaining in regulation. Wohlfeiler took a shot from the left circle and Schaus failed to corral the rebound. Several Huskies jammed at the puck, but Schaus regained control and forced a faceoff.
After a successful penalty kill in the final few minutes, the Huskies attempted to even the score but the Eagles held on for their first Hockey East title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies' season is over, and despite the heartbreaking loss it was a successful season for third-year coach
Dave Flint, who led Northeastern to its first ever Hockey East championship contest. It is also the second straight winning season for Flint and the Huskies.
Game Notes:
Casey Pickett seems to have a knack for scoring when the cameras are rolling. Sunday's championship game was the second in two seasons to be broadcast on NESN, and Pickett has scored in both games. She potted a goal at Frozen Fenway on Jan. 8, 2010 before tallying a goal tonight.
Pickett was also the most prolific scorer in the tournament. She finished the playoffs with three goals and three assists for six points.
Northeastern scored first in three of the four games against BC this season.
This was the final game for six Northeastern seniors.
Lori Antflick,
