The Huskies opened the 2011 season Friday with a 1-1 tie against Providence in an exhibition match at Parsons Field.
Northeastern opened the scoring less than five minutes into the scrimmage on a scramble in the box. Sophomore
Hillary Savoy was on hand to put it in from close range after the ball ricocheted around the box following a corner kick.
Providence leveled the score a short time later after some good work in the right corner by midfielder Courtney Collins. After creating space for herself, Collins played a hard cross through the penalty area for Taylor Bartini to place her header into the far side of the goal.
The next best chance for either side to take the lead came with less than 20 minutes left, and it fell on the foot of Napoli once more.
Freshman
Lahaina Zoller played a through pass to Napoli that put the striker one-on-one with keeper Jessica Goudreault, only for Napoli to shoot against the far post.
With the game winding down, both teams pressed hard for a winning goal, though none was forthcoming. A Northeastern corner kick resulted in a header just wide of the post, while the Friars saw a curling shot from distance sneak just over the bar.
Northeastern opens its regular season on the road on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. when it takes on Connecticut.
