The Northeastern women's soccer team opened its CAA slate with a dramatic victory over the VCU Rams, 2-1, Friday evening at Parsons Field. The Huskies broke a 1-1 tie in the 89th minute of regulation for a thrilling home triumph.

Northeastern forward Greta Samuelsdottir put the Huskies on top, 1-0, in the 25th minute on a feed down the field from Kirby Anderson. Samuelsdottir's shot deflected off the VCU goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The Rams tied the score in the 36th minute when midfielder Heather Hovanesian put a shot past goalkeeper Paige Burnett, assisted by fellow midfielder Gabby Wilson.

Northeastern closed out the half pressuring VCU. Samuelsdottir missed the net wide left on a shot with just under 14 minutes to go. Forward Hanna Terry and defender Cassidy Costa both had shots blocked with less than a minute left in the half.

The two teams shared opportunities throughout the majority of the second half with neither side able to break through.

Senior defender Kelly Matthews finally broke the tie with 1:45 remaining in regulation when she picked the top right corner on a free kick from a few yards outside the box.

The Huskies held on for the late-game win. Northeastern and VCU each registered six shots in the first half. VCU ended the match with 15 shots, while Northeastern finished with 10.

Freshman goalkeeper Paige Burnett recorded eight saves in the winning effort.

Prior to the match, senior Veronica Napoli was honored in a ceremony to recognize her becoming Northeastern's all-time leader in goals and points.

The Huskies return to action when they take on James Madison on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
