The Northeastern women's soccer team fell to the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens Thursday afternoon at Parsons Field, 3-0.
In their third conference match of the season, the Huskies were unable to convert on several solid scoring opportunities.
Battling torrential downpours early on, the Huskies manufactured a scoring chance when junior forward Greta Samuelsdottir found freshman Lahaina Zoller at the edge of the box. Zoller volleyed the cross off the left post and out of play.
Midway through the first half, senior midfielder Kirby Anderson had a shot from outside the box stopped on an acrobatic leap from Delaware goalkeeper Breanna Stemler.
With seven and a half minutes left in the half, Samuelsdottir had a header off a corner saved in front.
Delaware found the back of the net in the 40th minute on a shot from midfielder Chelsea Duffy.
At 35:03 in the second half, the Fightin' Blue Hens increased their lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick buried into the lower right corner by forward Amy Pickard. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Burnett had been forced to come out, and committed the foul inside the box on a rush by Delaware.
Northeastern forward Veronica Napoli hit the crossbar on a shot from just outside the box midway through the second half, nearly cutting the deficit to one.
Forward Ali Miller sealed the game for Delaware in the 73rd minute, dribbling past Burnett and shooting it into the net unassisted.
The Huskies outshot Delaware, 18-14, on the match, and had 10 of their shots saved.
The Huskies now rest at 6-5-0 on the season and are 2-1-0 in conference play. They play Drexel on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Philadelphia. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
