Huskies fall 73-70 in shootout at Solomon

The Northeastern women's basketball fell in a hotly contest by a score of 73-70 on Sunday afternoon in a CAA contest at Solomon Court.

With the loss the Huskies record stands at 2-12 (0-3 CAA). Old Dominion moves to 5-11 (2-1 CAA).

Sophomore Jewel Tunstull got the game's first basket, knocking down a turn-around jumper from just outside the paint. Two possessions later Tunstull found freshman A'lece Mark for an open three, putting the Huskies up five early. After senior captain Jamie Conroy drew a charge, Tunstull got to the line and knocked down one of two free throws to build the Northeastern lead to 6-0.

After a Tunstull steal, Conroy drilled a three to open up a 9-0 lead for Northeastern and force an ODU timeout. Following two buckets by the Lady Monarchs, Mark hit a runner following the first media timeout. Old Dominion responded with a lay-up and a three, cutting the score to 11-9. Senior captain Dani Iervolino and ODU's Myeisha Hall traded threes before Conroy found junior Deanna Kerkhof in the corner for her first three, building the Huskies' lead back to five.

A three from Tiffany Minor gave the Lady Monarchs a 19-17 lead mid-way through the first half. Hall rattled home another three for ODU to build the lead to five and Jackie Cook hit a jumper to make it seven before Mark ended the run with a lay-in.

Conroy found Tunstull for an easy jumper in the paint after making a strong baseline drive, and the game went into the third media timeout at 7:22 with Old Dominion clinging to a 24-21 lead.

Junior Christine Huber got on the scoresheet with her first points after the stoppage, scoring in the paint off a feed from Mark. Ashley Betz-White hit another three for Old Dominion to build the lead back to five, but Iervolino knocked down her second triple to cut it to two.

After four quick points for the Lady Monarchs, Mark went to the charity stripe and hit a pair of free throws, slimming the score to 33-28. After a defensive stop, Conroy found Tunstull inside again for an easy lay-up. Tunstull knocked down a pair of freebies on Northeastern's next possession and the deficit was cut to one.

Following an ODU basket, Mark shook a pair of defenders and hit a lay-up, sending the game to half's final media timeout with a score of 35-34. ODU hit a three coming out of the break, but Tunstull muscled her way inside for another lay-up and then blocked a shot on the other end. Kerkhof knocked down a three just before the end of the half, and Old Dominion took a 42-39 lead into the break.

After a three-point play to start the half for the Lady Monarchs, Huber went to the line and hit one of two. Kerkhof hit the Huskies' first field goal of the half, knocking down a three off an assist from Conroy, then connecting again off a feed from Mark to cut to the score to 47-46 and force Old Dominion to burn a timeout.

Conroy alertly drew a charge on an ODU fast break before the half's first media timeout, then Tunstull got to the line on the other end and hit a pair to give Northeastern its first lead since early in the first half. The Lady Monarchs responded with five quick points to retake a 52-48 lead, forcing Coach Mann to burn her first timeout of the half.

After the timeout, Conroy hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to two, and Kerkhof knocked down a lay-in to tie the game at 52. Tunstull muscled her way inside and hit another bucket to give the Huskies the lead again, but Hall immediately responded with another three.

Tunstull tipped the score back in Northeastern's favor with a basket inside, then after a Huber steal fed Mark for a transition lay-up to give NU a 58-55 lead and force another Old Dominion timeout.

Hall tied the game following the timeout with yet another triple before a media timeout at 11:20 to play. After an Old Dominion turnover, Kerkhof hit a 15-footer to put Northeastern back on top. Shakeva Richards tied it up again with a pair of free throws and Hall hit her fifth three to put ODU on top by three.

Mary Buchan hit a jumper for the Lady Monarchs to extend their lead to five, but Kerkhof knocked down a three to cut it to two. Huber hit a jumper after four points by Old Dominion, and score heading into the final media timeout saw Northeastern trailing 69-65.

Mark knocked down a jumper to cut it two following a Northeastern timeout, but Cook responded for the Lady Monarchs with a three. With Old Dominion up five and just under a minute to play, Minor went to the line and hit one of two, building the lead to six. An Iervolino three cut the deficit in half, and Kerkhof drew a charge to regain Northeastern possession with 24 seconds to play.

Following a Northeastern timeout, Old Dominion's stingy defense forced Kerkhof to take a contested three, which was just off the mark as time expired, and the Lady Monarchs held on to take home a 73-70 victory.

Kerkhof led all scorers with 19, including five three pointers. Tunstull picked up her second consecutive double-double, dropping 17 points and pulling down 11 boards. Mark added a career-high 15 points for the Huskies on 6-9 shooting from the field, while Iervolino's three long-balls gave her nine points. Conroy led all players with seven assists. Huber added five points and six boards.

Jackie Cook led the way for Old Dominion with 19, while Tia Lewis added 16 and five boards. Hall finished with 15 points on 5-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Overall, the teams combined to knock down 21 three-balls.

The Huskies continue their home-stand on Thursday when they welcome George Mason to Solomon Court. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
