Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior captain Greta Samuelsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) scored twice, including a penalty kick winner in overtime, and the Northeastern women's soccer team clinched a postseason berth with a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

Sameulsdottir's goals give her 61 career points, moving her into sole possession of third in NU history. With seven goals this season, she is now the fourth player in program history to hit the quarter century mark in goals, as her 25 are tied for third all-time. Her multi-goal game marks the fifth time in her career she has found twine twice in a contest, and third time this season.

The Huskies move to 8-9 on the year with the win, including a 6-3 mark in CAA play, which will be good enough to send them to their second straight CAA tournament. Last year, NU reached the semifinals of the tournament before falling to VCU. Tracey Leone has now made the postseason in two of her first three seasons at Northeastern.

NU outshot Old Dominion 14-11 on the day, and sophomore keeper Paige Burnett (Placentia, Calif.) made four saves for the Huskies in the win.

ODU's Kelly Evans had the game's first chance in the 10th minute, sending a shot off the post. Ashlee Coutu had the game's first shot on goal a minute later, but Burnett was up to snuff and made her first save of the game. Coutu had another chance in the 25th minute, but Burnett lunged to turn it aside and keep the contest scoreless.

The Huskies threatened in the 32nd minute, when junior Hanna Terry (Park City, Utah) made a lunging play on a ball heading out of bounds, popping a cross into the box. Freshman Morgan Hilby (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was awaiting the cross, but her header skipped inches over the cage.  Samuelsdottir then rung the crossbar in the 35th minute, juking a pair of defenders to get free in the process.

The game went to the half still scoreless, with ODU holding a 4-3 edge in shots, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.

The Huskies broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. After a shot by sophomore Awnalisa Walker (Sugar Land, Texas) was stopped by Brianna Alvardo, NU earned a corner, taken by redshirt sophomore Hannah O'Donnell (Dallas, Texas). O'Donell's serve in was headed from freshman Oksana Nicholls (Glendora, Calif.) to the head of Samuelsdottir, who punched in her team-high sixth goal of the year. The assist for Nicholls marks the first point of her career.

NU kept up the pressure midway through the half, with Samuelsdottir and freshman Brittani Gardella (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) firing shots on goal that were turned aside in the 59th and 60th minutes, respectively. Hilby had another chance in the 72nd minute, but Alvardo, who replaced starting keeper Laura Bush at halftime, made the stop.

The Lady Monarchs found their equalizer in the 74th minute, when Taylor Smith banged in a rebound off a Jordan Jones shot that hit the post. It was Smith's second goal of the season.

Jones tried to get on the board herself in the 77th minute, but Burnett was there to make the save. In the final seconds of regulation the Lady Monarchs had a pair of shots in the box, but Walker and rookie Shayna Blackwood (Somerville, N.J.) hung tough to block both chances and send the contest to extra time.

Thirty-four seconds into the first overtime, redshirt sophomore Devin Griffin (Whitman, Mass.) was taken down in the box, leading to a Northeastern penalty kick. Samuelsdottir stepped up and buried the free chance into the left corner of the net to send the Huskies to the overtime victory.

The Huskies conclude their regular season on Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on the Hofstra Pride. Game time in Long Island is set for 3:30 p.m.
