PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – With a chance to host the CAA Tournament on the line, No. 10 Northeastern battled 23 Drexel to the bitter end, but the Dragons held fast for a slim 1-0 win over the Huskies Friday night. DU's only goal of the evening came midway through the second period on a penalty stroke.
Northeastern, as it so often does, attempted to get on the board early, starting off with a shot by
Deirdre Duke that was promptly saved on the spot by Drexel's Jantien Gunter. Northeastern dominated most offensive categories in the first half, firing nine shots to Drexel's one through 35 minutes. The Huskies also earned seven penalty corners, while the Dragons went without a single one, but nothing went in for the Red and Black.
At the 55:12 mark, Drexel earned itself a penalty stroke, only the fourth one given up by the Huskies all season. The Dragons' Lauren Hibshman took the shot and connected to give DU a crucial 1-0 lead with 20 minutes to play. The Huskies were stunted from that point on, however, only able to get three shots off in those 20 minutes, allowing Drexel to escape with the upset win. When all was said and done, Northeastern led Drexel in shots, 14-5, and penalty corners, 10-1.
Northeastern returns home for the season finale against Towson at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be played at Harvard's Jordan Field, and before the first whistle, all eight NU seniors will be honored for their contributions over their careers. All fans who plan on attending should note that there will be a $10 parking fee per car due to the high volume of traffic Harvard will be experiencing with multiple events.
