NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore keeper
Paige Burnett (Placentia, Calif.) picked up her fourth shutout in six games, and the Northeastern women's soccer team dropped the Delaware Blue Hens (7-6, 4-2 CAA), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in Newark, Del. With the win, NU moves to 5-8 on the year (3-2 CAA).
Freshman
Shayna Blackwood (Somerville, N.J.) and senior
Sandra Magnusdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) supplied the offense for NU, tallying goals in the first half to build a lead the Huskies would not relinquish. Blackwood's goal was the first of her career, and the first goal for an NU rookie this season.
Northeastern dominated the pace throughout, outshooting Delaware 14-7 and generating seven corners to the Hens' four. The Huskies held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Blue Hens keeper Jessica Levy made three saves in the loss, while Burnett stopped four shots for the clean sheet.
NU came out of the gates firing, forcing Levy to make saves in the eighth minute on senior
Greta Samuelsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) and in the 14th minute on sophomore
Lahaina Zoller (Honolulu, Hawaii). After Burnett made her first save in the 22nd minute, NU earned a corner in the 25th minute. Magnusdottir sent the serve in, and after a scramble Blackwood one-timed a loose ball into the left post at 25:21 for the eventual game-winner.
Burnett was tested in the 35th minute with an Ali Miller shot, before Magnusdottir struck again for the Huskies in the 38th minute. From 40 yards out, the Icelandic defender curved a shot from the right side into the top left corner of the cage. The goal was Magnusdottir's second of the season.
The Blue Hens had a pair of chances in the final stages of the second half, but Burnett made stops on Emily Market in the 78th minute and Melissa Pennington in the 80th minute to preserve her shutout. Burnett has now blanked three of the Huskies' first five league opponents.
Northeastern returns home for its final two home matches of the season at Parsons Field, starting with Towson on Oct. 12. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
