Northeastern caps Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach

Day 2
The Northeastern women's track & field team wrapped up its outdoor season opener at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. hosted by Coastal Carolina.

Senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed was the Huskies' headliner in the 100-meter hurdles and claimed the runner-up spot with a time of 14.08. The Bronx, N.Y. native just missed out on her first outdoor title as South Carolina's Chalese Davis won the event with 13.89.

The Huskies trotted out six sprinters in the 200-meter dash. Veteran Sarah Trotman outran 100 runners, finishing 20th in a field of 120 with a time of 25.10. Sophomore Ashlee Pitts and rookie Victoria Alexander registered marks of 25.53 and 25.67, respectively, for 31st and 39th, respectively. First-year sprinter Jessica Dunnigan captured 51st (26.12) while senior Ida Cance and junior Jillena Decarteret registered respective mars of 27.49 (88th) and 28.01 (96th).

Freshman Monet Brathwaite finished 44th in the 400-meter with a clip of 1:00.87. Senior Christiana Gallagher and junior Eryn Wheeler represented NU in the 800-meter run as Gallagher's time of 2:17.71 was good for 14th while Wheeler's rate of 2:22.98 stood for 33rd place.

In the 1,500-meter run, junior Laura Coyne and senior Courtney Mortimer ran for 4:58.22 and 4:59.57, in that order, for times of 25th and 29th. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Chelsea Hudson cleared 1:04.57 for 14th place.

The quartet of Alexander, Abdur-Rashed, Trotman and Dunnigan joined forced in the 4 x 100-meter relay and captured sixth place with a time of 46.94. In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Brathwaite, Hudson, Gallagher and Pitts were the 12th-place finishers with a combined clip of 3:57.69.

Junior Rachel Taback had a strong showing in the discus throw as she outperformed 64 athletes with a 12th-place pitch of 40.35m (132'4). Classmate Julia Westover finished 38th in the same event with a clearance of 32.84m (107'9).

Northeastern hosts its first outdoor event of the season next Saturday, March 24 at Solomon Outdoor Track in Dedham, Mass.

Day 1
The Northeastern women's track & field team had a strong showing on its first day of the outdoor season, posting a pair of runner-up finishes and a top-five school record on Friday at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Coastal Carolina is hosting the event that includes 54 teams and over 1,700 athletes.

Senior Nia Howard and junior Jillena Decarteret highlighted the Huskies' efforts with their second-place performances. Howard jumped past 30 leapers in the long jump with her runner-up mark of 5.74m (18'10) while Decarteret sprung over 3.65m (11'11.75) to tie for second place.

As part of the 'Campbell Invitational', junior Julia Westover registered a fourth-place toss of 54.12m (177'7) in the weight throw. The distances stands as Northeastern's fifth-best throw in school history as Westover topped her old mark of 168'2 (March 26, 2011). Classmate Rachel Taback competed in the other field and threw past 68 other hammer throwers, tying for 10th place with a heave of 47.54m (156'). Taback was in a field of 78 on Friday.

Continuing in the field, senior Ida Cance finished 15th in the high jump with a mark of 1.55m (5'1) while the 4 x 200-meter relay squad consisting of rookies Jessica Dunnigan, Monet Brathwaite and Victoria Alexander and senior Sarah Trotman recorded a 10th-place time of 1:42.04.

On the oval, veteran Annie Scully motored for a time of 18:46 in the 5,000-meter challenge, finishing in 17th out of 54 harriers.

Four Huskies attempted to qualify for the 100-meter finals on Saturday, but Dunnigan (12.35 – 28th), sophomore Ashlee Pitts (12.39 – 30th), Alexander (12.52 – 39th) and Howard (12.58 – 44th) placed outside the top 16 to move on.

Senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed embarked on another successful outdoor campaign, outrunning 56 others in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries. The Bronx, N.Y. native finished with a time of 14.08 in third place overall and will compete for the title on Saturday.

The Huskies wrap up their first outdoor event of the season on Saturday, March 17 at Coastal Carolina.
