RICHMOND, Va., March 2, 2012--Freshman Quincy Ford scored a game-high 18 points and fellow rookie Reggie Spencer grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds as Northeastern defeated William & Mary, 57-49, in the first round of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championship on Friday night in Richmond, Va. The Huskies, who advance to the quarterfinal round for the sixth time in seven years, will face No. 2 VCU on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Northeastern, which jumped out to an early 11-4 lead to open the game, trailed the Tribe for only 53 seconds on the evening. Bill Coen's squad pushed a three-point halftime edge to 12 points early in the second half and, after withstanding a Tribe run, used a smothering defense effort and timely rebounding to secure the win.

Junior co-captains Jonathan Lee and Joel Smith scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Huskies. Lee, who was saddled with foul trouble all evening, fouled out with 10:38 remaining after a season-low 17 minutes of action. Spencer scored six points, senior Kashief Edwards added five, Alwayne Bigby contributed four and Kauri Black pitched in with three. Ford also added seven boards, which tied for second-best in the game, to go with a game-high three steals.

Tim Rusthoven scored 12 points to lead William & Mary and Marcus Thornton added 10. The Huskies, who turned in one of their best defensive efforts of the season, held four of the Tribe's top five scorers under their season average. W&M's 49 points were the second-fewest by a Northeastern opponent this season.

After staking out a three-point halftime edge, Northeastern opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers from Lee and Smith to push the lead to nine, 31-22. W&M's Matt Rum answered with a three of his own. The Huskies quickly responded with two Lee free throws and a 3-pointer by Ford from the left wing to make it an 11-point game.

After the Tribe's Quinn McDowell, who was held to half his season average, connected on a jumper, Ford drilled another three, this time from the right wing to give the Huskies a game-high 12-point lead with 16:38 remaining.

The Huskies, though, went the next 6:40 without a point. The Red and Black defense minimized the damage by holding W&M to just four points during the stretch. A lay-up by Bigby at the 9:58 mark ended the drought and pushed the NU lead back to nine, 41-32.

The Tribe then engineered an 11-5 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to narrow the gap to just three, 46-43, with 6:27 showing on the clock. But with the outcome in doubt, the Huskies again stood tall at the defensive end, limiting William & Mary to just six points over the final six-and-a-half minutes of the game.

During a crucial stretch, after the Tribe had cut the lead to seven with three minutes remaining, Northeastern maintained possession of the ball for more than 90 seconds on the strength of offensive rebounds by Ford and Spencer. The Huskies closed the game by outscored the Tribe, 11-4, to set the final margin at 57-49.

In the first half, Ford scored six early points to lead NU to an 11-4 lead. The Huskies pushed the lead to 10 at 20-10 with 8:21 remaining. The Tribe offense, which scored just 10 points over the first 14 minutes of the half, registered 12 in the final six minutes to pull to within three, 25-22, at the half.

Rusthoven scored eight to lead all scorers over the opening 20 minutes. Ford had seven for the Huskies.

For the game, Northeastern shot 34.0 percent (16-47), including 31.3 percent (5-16) from 3-point range. William & Mary was 39.6 percent (19-48) from the field and 27.3 percent (6-22) from long range. The Huskies connected on 20-of-33 (60.6 percent) free throw attempts to the Tribe's 5-of-10 (50.0 percent). Northeastern dominated the glass, out-rebounding W&M by 15 (42 to 27).

Northeastern will face second-seeded VCU on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinal round. The Huskies are 2-3 all-time in CAA quarterfinal games, including a win in their last quarterfinals appearance in 2010. The game is the first-ever meeting between the programs in the CAA Tournament, and the 14th all-time meeting. Overall, VCU leads the series, 7-6, but Northeastern has won four of the last six head-to-head meetings. New England residents can watch the game live on CSN New England, while fans across the East Coast can catch all the action live on their local Comcast station.
