Huskies close out two-event weekend in style

The Northeastern women's track & field team posted successful performances at a pair of locations this weekend including the Florida Relays in Gainsville, Fla. and the George Davis Invitational in Lowell, Mass. as the Huskies achieved three victories, two runner-up showings and seven third-place performances.

Junior Julia Westover continues to dominate the hammer throw event by emerging victoriously in a field of 34 with a winning toss of 43.08m (174'2). Classmate Rachel Taback made strides with her second-place performance of 52.28m (171'6).  The two also competed in the discus throw as Taback and Westover recorded fourth and 30th-place pitches, respectively, in the discus throw with marks of 38.71m (127') and 27.12m (89').

Junior Lauren Bennett won her first pole vaulting event of the season with a spring of 3.35m (10'11.75), topping classmate Jillena Decarteret (3.20m -10'6), rookie Dana Schweiger and senior Ashley Furlong who all tied for third place. Junior Susie Janik finished eight with a clearance of 3.05m (10'0) while sophomore Kelly Benfey took 10th with a mark of 3.05m (10'0).

Junior Nia Howard captured the long jump title with a clearance of 5.70m (18'8.50) as freshman Jessica Dunnigan gained eighth with a jump of 5.28m (17'4). Sophomores Olivia Stevens and Ally Crooke closed out in 10th and 15th, in that order, with marks of 5.19m (17'0.50) and 5.03m (16'6).

Howard continued her success in the 100-meter dash at a rate of 12.50 for second place as first-year sprinter Victoria Alexander took third with a time of 12.56. Junior Kelly Madigan finished 25th with a jaunt of 13.27.

Stevens was also a third-place finisher in the triple jump with a combination of 11.21m (36'9.50) while sophomore Chelsea Hudson captured third, as well, in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.11.

In the 800-meter dash, senior Christiana Gallagher was the third-place finisher with a scamper of 2:17.47. Junior Laura Coyne was 11th with a time of 2:21.69 and senior Courtney Mortimer crossed in 2:22.12 for 13th place.

Five Huskies ran half the oval in the 200-meter dash with Alexander emerging from the NU pack in fourth place with a time of 25.80. Dunnigan crossed in 26.23 for seventh while Howard closed out in 12th with a time of 26.65. Madigan and Stevens finished in 38th and 49th, respectively, with mars of 28.17 and 28.97.

Sophomore Camille Henry notched fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.69 and second-year runner Meghan Underhill posted a 22nd-place time of 1:08.22.

In the distance game, junior Katie Barrett finished eighth with a time of 10:21.71 and sophomore Danielle Klein gained 15th with a run of 10:36.37. Senior Meegan Joly finished 16th in 10:39.88.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Crooke finished 18th with a sprint of 16.65 while sophomore Kate Madigan posted a 21st-place time of 17.13.

Senior Ashley Furlong closed out the field in the javelin throw with a 10th-place pitch of 29.50m (96'9).

FLORIDA RELAYS
Over the course of Friday and Saturday, senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed defeated 35 other hurdles from the likes of the ACC, SEC and other strong conferences with a time of 14.43 in the 100-meter dash.

Sophomore Georgia Pingue represented the Huskies in the field with a 23rd-place combination of 11.63m (38'2) in the triple jump.

The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Howard, Abdur-Rashed, senior Sarah Trotman and rookie Monet Brathwaite finished 38th with a combined clip of 47.28 while the 4 x 200-meter quartet of Abdur-Rashed, Alexander, Brathwaite and Trotman posted a 23rd-place performance of 1:47.76.


Northeastern closed out its home track & field schedule next Saturday, April 14 when it hosts the Solomon Invitational and Solomon Outdoor Track in Dedham, Mass.
