Huskies prep for 2012 season opener

2012 Schedule | 2012 Quick Facts

The Northeastern men's soccer team is one week away from taking the field for its 2012 season opener against Providence. The date with the Friars will be the first of nine home games for the Huskies this season.

Following a 10-6-3 mark last season and an appearance in the CAA Quarterfinals, NU is primed to make a deep run into the conference tournament and beyond. Northeastern will also be looking to extend its winning streak at Parsons Field, where it has not lost since Nov. 6, 2010.

FORWARDS:
3 returners / 2 newcomers / 3 lost

Following the departure of three of the team's top four scorers from last season, head coach Brian Ainscough will look to sophomore tri-captain Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave and senior Don Anding to carry the load up front for NU in 2012. Anding posted five points on two goals and an assist in 17 games for the Huskies last season.

Also expected to compete for playing time this season is freshman Devin Devoy. The North Attleboro, Mass. native comes to Northeastern from Bishop Feehan High School, where his finished his career as the all-time leading scorer.

MIDFIELDERS:
7 returners / 2 newcomers / 2 lost

The strength of the 2012 Huskies resides in the midfield, where NU returns eight players from last season's squad. Among them is the team's leading returning scorer and 2012 tri-captain Dante Marini.  Marini had a breakout season for the Huskies in 2011, tallying seven goals and five assists en route to All-CAA First Team honors.

Marini will be flanked by senior tri-captain Andre Ciliotta and junior Laurence Braude in 2012. Ciliotta netted two goals, both of them game-winners, last season while Braude notched a game-winner of his own against Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Seniors Eddie Nam and Eric Dyer, along with juniors Hamadi Cantave and Karl Rumph, are also expected to see the field this season while freshmen Jorge Acosta and Darek Wajda will push the returners for playing time.

DEFENDERS:
5 returning / 2 newcomers / 2 lost

A Northeastern defense that was tied for second in the CAA in goals against last season returns five players, led by 2011 All-CAA Rookie selection Ambry Moss. Moss, the only freshman to start every game last season, saw time at center back, right back and defensive midfielder.

NU's experienced defensive core also includes junior Connor Alexander, who appeared in 14 games last season, and Nikko Lara. Sophomores Mike Lobben and Ryan Wagner should see increased playing time after their first collegiate seasons in 2011.

Simon Cox and Jonathan Eckford join the Northeastern backline this season after transferring from N.C. State and Southern Connecticut State, respectively. Cox appeared in 18 games for the Wolfpack in 2011, while Eckford earned Northeast-10 All-Rookie honors in 2010.

GOALKEEPERS:
2 returning / 2 newcomers / 1 lost

Senior Oliver Blum returns for his third season with the Huskies, and will be looked upon to provide leadership to a young group of NU goalkeepers. Blum was first in the conference in goals against average (1.14) and third in save percentage (.761) last season, and was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 31. Jacob Aduama is the other returning goalkeeper after appearing in two games last season.

Freshmen Dylan Faber and Maximillian Brown will both push Blum for time in 2012. Faber was a two-year starter at West Anchorage High School as well as the Darlington School Soccer Academy for three seasons. Brown led the Beacon School to the PSAL city championship and played for one of the top programs in the New York Red Bulls and coach Rob Elliott.
