Box Score (Box score forthcoming)
The Northeastern women's soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon, with a double overtime defeat at the hands of Cincinnati in Ohio, by a score of 2-1. The loss concludes Northeastern's two-game road trip.
Kristina Utley was brilliant in goal for the Bearcats, picking up the win and recording nine saves.
Paige Burnett took the start for NU, and recorded a pair of saves. Burnett falls to 0-3 on the year, while Utley moves to 2-0-1.
Sophomore
Awnalisa Walker broke Northeastern's early season scoring woes in the 78th minute with her first goal of the season. The strike was the second of the Texan's career.
The Huskies had plenty of chances in the contest, with senior captain
Greta Samuelsdottir and redshirt-sophomore
Devin Griffin combining to fire 12 shots, including a pair each on goal. Senior
Sandra Magnusdottir added four shots, all on goal.
Rookie
Shayna Blackwood, who started for NU in a lineup that included five freshmen and five sophomores, had the first NU chance of the contest in the 22nd minute, but her shot was redirected by Utley. Magnusdottir and Samuelsdottir mustered the Huskies strongest chances at the end of the half, but all three of their shots were stopped by Utley in the final third of the opening frame. The Bearcat keeper had a strong first half, stopping five NU chances.
The Huskies had a golden opportunity in the 54th minute, when Samuelsdottir won a loose ball and flicked it to Griffin. The redshirt-sophomore broke free and fed the ball back to Samuelsdottir, but the Bearcats back line made a strong recovery and forced Samuelsdottir to fire a blast over the goal.
The Bearcats finally broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute, when Kelly Latimer gained some space off a broken corner play and sent a rocket from the top of the box past a diving Burnett. The blast was the freshman's first career goal.
Junior
Hannah O'Donnell got deep in the Cincinnati box in the 69th minute off a feed from Samuelsdottir, but her chance was blocked by a Bearcat defender.
Northeastern broke its early season scoring drought in the 78th minute, when a bouncing loose ball in front of the net forced Utley out of her net. In the scramble,
Lahaina Zoller was able to come away with the ball and feed it to Walker, who punched a goal into an empty net to equalize.
Both teams generated chances in the waning minutes of regulation, but Burnett and Utley stood tall and the contest went to overtime knotted at 1-1. The Huskies outshot the Bearcats 23-14 during the first 90 minutes.
Griffin had NU's first chance of overtime, firing a sliding blast in the 94th minute which Utley corralled. The contest went to double overtime, where Griffin had another chance blocked in the 104th minute. Cincinnati threatened in the 107th, but Katie Greer's blast was turned aside by Burnett.
The Bearcats would not be stopped, however, and in the 108th minute, 1:17 away from a draw, Greer found the back of the net for a golden goal winner.
Northeastern outshot Cincinnati, 25-18, on the day, and also held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. The game was a very physical one for both teams, as the squads combined for 22 fouls on the day.
The Huskies return home on Friday, Aug. 31 when they welcome New Hampshire to Parsons Field. Game time in Brookline is set for 6 p.m., and all the action will be available live, free of charge at GoNU.com/xstream.
