BROOKLINE, MASS.- The Northeastern women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season on Friday night, defeating UNH by a score of 3-2 in a hotly contested contest at Parsons Field. NU is now 6-0-1 against the Wildcats since 2004.
Senior captain
Greta Samuelsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) scored twice for the Huskies, including the game-winner, and sophomore
Bianca Calderone (Wellesley, Mass.) added her first career goal as well.
Paige Burnett (Placentia, Calif.) got the start in net for the Huskies and made five saves to earn her first win of the season.
Samuelsdottir's two goals gave her 20 for her career, moving her into the top-five goal scorers in program history. She is now tied for fifth all-time with Jen North ('04).
New Hampshire drew first blood in the contest, when Elizabeth Curry headed a shot past Burnett off a corner serve in by Monique LaMotte in the 17th minute.
Northeastern responded in the 30th minute, when junior
Hanna Terry launched a high cross deep in the box, which Samuelsdottir was able to beat UNH keeper Erica Correa for and head in her for her first goal of the night.
The Huskies nearly took the lead in the 38th minute, but Calderone's header off a
Hannah O'Donnell corner skipped wide. Calderone would not be denied again, and in the 44th minute she took a long feed from junior captain
Hillary Savoy before beating Correa one on one to put the Huskies up 2-1 heading into the half.
It didn't take long in the second half for NU to build on its lead, with Samuelsdottir striking again in the 53rd minute. The Icelandic International took a beautiful feed from Sophomore
Lahaina Zoller and burst past Correa for her second goal of the night and the 20th of her career.
A yellow card was assessed to Savoy in the 66th minute, leading to a free kick for UNH's Gabrielle Sloan which sailed wide. Another caution was issued to the Wildcats' Drea Nogueira in the 67th minute, but O'Donnell's free kick serve in netted nothing for the Huskies.
UNH pulled within one in the 70th, when Sloan won a loose ball and was left all alone, popping up a shot past Burnett and into the net for her first collegiate goal. The Wildcats nearly equalized moments later, but Burnett made a spectacular diving save on a LaMotte blast to preserve the lead.
A yellow card was assessed to NU freshman
Oksana Nicholls in the 81st minute, but UNH's subsequent chance sailed wide. LaMotte had a late chance for the Wildcats in the 89th minute, but her long blast was corralled by Burnett and the Huskies held on for the victory.
The Huskies and Wildcats were an even 10-10 in shots, and UNH held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The teams combined for three yellow cards and 28 fouls in the physical contest.
Northeastern has the rest of the weekend off, but will face its toughest test of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Chestnut Hill to take on the No. 7 Boston College Eagles. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
