BOSTON — The Northeastern Huskies surged to 5-0 in CAA play with a 65-60 victory over Hofstra on Wednesday night at historic Matthews Arena in Boston. Sophomore standout
Quincy Ford (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting as the league-leading Huskies (10-7, 5-0 CAA) won their sixth game in seven outings.
Northeastern never trailed in the contest, leading for more than 39 minutes of play. The Huskies scored on their first possession when
Joel Smith hit the 200th 3-pointer of his Northeastern career and, after David Imes tied the game for Hofstra on the next possession, Ford hit a jumper that gave NU the lead for good. The home-standing Huskies, who led by as many as 11 points in the first half and 13 in the second half, withstood a late Pride rally to claim the win.
NU's senior backcourt duo of Smith (Leander, Texas) and
Jonathan Lee (Flint, Mich.) joined Ford in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Dinko Marshavelski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) tied a career high with six rebounds to lead NU on the glass, while chipping in six points.
Demetrius Pollard (Virginia Beach, Va.) added eight points and
Reggie Spencer (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and
David Walker (Stow, Ohio) tallied three points apiece.
Imes led the Pride (5-12, 2-2) with 19 points, hitting an impressive 5-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc. Stephen Nwaukoni grabbed a game-high eight boards and tallied 11 points in the loss.
Leading 30-24 at the half, NU scored the first five points out of the locker room to grab an 11-point advantage. Lee hit a 3-pointer to snap a two-minute scoring drought for both sides then assisted on a Ford layup to put the Huskies ahead, 35-24, with 17:03 remaining.
Hofstra, which had won two of its last three games entering the evening, answered quickly. The Pride used an 8-1 run, keyed by 3-pointers from Mejia and Buie, to pull within four at 36-32.
With the lead at its smallest point in more than 15 minutes, Ford responded for NU with a personal 8-0 run that curbed the Pride attack and swung momentum back to the home side. The 6-8 swingman hit a jumper and a 3-pointer, then collected a steal and finished with a traditional three-point play to push the Huskies' lead to 44-32 at the 13:31 mark. The one-minute scoring spurt exemplified the play of the preseason All-CAA selection, who has been held to single digits only once in the last month.
Hofstra twice cut the margin to eight over the next 2:30 of play, but NU was equal to the task, with Lee and Pollard hitting layups each time the margin dipped to single digits. A lay-in by Marshavelski pushed the advantage to 12 before a Pride run made it 55-49 with 6:22 showing on the clock.
Both sides traded a pair of free throws and lay-ins, which kept the margin at six points as the game entered the final five minutes.
After a Northeastern timeout, Smith connected on his third 3-pointer of the game, but Imes equaled the effort less than 15 seconds later. Spencer then hit a free throw for NU to push the lead to seven, 63-56, with 3:38 to play. Spencer's tally was NU's last until only six seconds remained.
Hofstra trimmed the Huskies' lead to just three points and, on its final possession, missed two game-tying attempts. After the second miss, Lee secured the rebound, was fouled, and made both free throws to ice the game and lift NU to the 65-60 win.
In the first half, Northeastern raced to an early 10-3 lead behind a 3-pointer from Smith, a Spencer layup, back-to-back baskets by Ford and a 3-pointer from Walker.
Hofstra closed to within three before Spencer and Ford hit layups to push the lead back to seven, 14-7, at the 13:57 mark.
The teams traded baskets over the next five minutes until Marshavelski hit consecutive shots to put the home side up by eight, 20-12, with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. Imes connected on a 3-pointer, but Ford followed with a tip-in and a layup to push the advantage to nine, 24-15.
The Pride responded with baskets by backcourt mates Buie and Mejia, but the Huskies' backcourt fired back, as Pollard and Smith hit 3-pointers just 25 seconds apart to push the lead to 11, 30-19, just two minutes before the half. The Pride, though, scored the final five points to close the gap to six at the break.
For the second straight game Northeastern enjoyed a decisive advantage in points off of turnovers. The Huskies, who outscored Towson 26-2 in that category a game ago, scored 28 points off 17 Hofstra turnovers, while the Pride tallied just eight points off 12 NU miscues.
Both teams registered similar shooting numbers on the night. Northeastern connected on 48 percent (25-52) of its field goal attempts, including 36 percent (8-22) from long range. The Huskies shot 78 percent (7-9) from the free throw line. Hofstra, meanwhile, shot 47 percent (23-49) from the floor and an equal 47 percent (8-17) from beyond the arc. HU was just 54 percent (6-11) from the charity stripe. Hofstra claimed a slight 30-26 edge on the glass. In specialty statistics, Northeastern claimed advantages in points in the paint (30-22), points off of turnovers (28-8), fast break points (6-4) and bench points (14-3). Hofstra outscored NU 12-8 on second-chance points.
Northeastern will hit the road for the sixth time in eight games when it travels to Delaware on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game. The Blue Hens are 3-1 in league play and have won five of their last six games.
