BROOKLINE, Mass. – Hartford netted a goal in each half and held the Northeastern men's soccer team (6-6-3) without a shot on goal to down the Huskies on Tuesday night at Parsons Field, 2-0.
Redshirt-junior
Jacob Aduama, who earned his first start in goal since 2011, was tested throughout the contest, tying a career-high with six saves as the Hawks outshot NU 14-7. Northeastern, meanwhile, was awarded six corner opportunities to Hartford's four.
Hartford dictated the pace of play from the outset of the first half, outshooting NU 9-2 and taking a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 11th minute. Early on in the frame the Hawks pressed the NU defense, throwing three shots towards goal in the third minute, including two from Anthony Santaga and Javoni Simms that Aduama turned aside.
Eight minutes later, Hartford opened the scoring with a tally from Jeff Tyron, his third of the season. Udi Cohen began the play by sending the ball from the midfield up to Tyron streaking towards goal. Tyron then sent a shot from the right side in on goal, beating Aduama for a 1-0 Hawk lead.
Two minutes after the goal, Cohen and Tyron nearly connected again when Cohen threaded a pass up to Tyron, who had gotten past the NU back line. Aduama, however, aggressively came out of his net to swat the ball away from Tyron before he could get a shot on goal.
Northeastern's best chance of the half came in the 17th minute when
Robbie Schallmo inserted the ball off a corner chance before
Simon Cox headed it to the right of the goal.
Tyron had another bid for his second of the night in the 21st minute when he took a feed from Simms and blasted a shot off the outside of the left post. Late in the half, Aduama robbed Cohen on a shot from point blank range in the 39th minute, diving to get a glove on the ball at the last minute.
NU came out of intermission putting pressure on the Hawk defense, and generated a couple chances in the first few minutes of the second half. The Huskies earned consecutive corners in the 51st minute, with
Dante Marini trying to find Cox in the box, but each of Cox's header bids sailed wide.
Hartford took a two-goal lead in the 57th minute when the Hawks capitalized on a Northeastern turnover in the midfield. After NU attempted to send the ball into the attacking third, Aleko Petridis intercepted the ball and fired it up field to Simms. Simms corralled the ball and sprinted down the field before blasting a shot into the lower left corner for his sixth goal of the season.
NU nearly got on the board in the 85th minute when Marini sent a ball into the box from 30 yards out, but Schallmo couldn't get a foot on it to redirect it towards goal.
The Huskies will be off for the next 10 days before returning to action on Nov. 2 when Northeastern hosts College of Charleston at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
