Late goal lifts Harvard past field hockey, 1-0

DEDHAM, Mass. – After dominating the first half of play with a 10-4 shot advantage, the Northeastern field hockey team saw Harvard net a goal with four minutes remaining in regulation to down the Huskies on Wednesday night at Dedham Field, 1-0.

Cara Ahlgrim, earning her first start of the season, made three saves for NU while her counterpart, Jenn Hatfield, made seven saves to earn the shutout. Northeastern outshot the Crimson 12-10 in the game and generated nine corners to the Crimson's four.

The Huskies controlled the tempo of the of the contest for the opening 35 minutes, outshooting HU 10-4 and earning seven corner opportunities to Harvard's one. Hatfield, however, stood tall in goal and prevented Northeastern from taking a first half lead.

Natalie Stewart had NU's best chance of the half near the midway mark of the period when her blast from just inside the circle was steered aside by Hatfield before NU picked up its third corner of the stanza.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Crimson began to take control, pressuring the NU defense with six shots and limiting the Huskies to just two bids on goal in the final 35 minutes. Emmy Zweserijn nearly gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left when her blast from the right side of the circle was kicked aside by Hatfield.

Harvard broke through with four minutes remaining in regulation when Marissa Balleza took a feed from Kaitlyn Boudah on the right side and fired a shot past Ahlgrim into the right corner for the eventual game-winner.

The Huskies will be back in action on Friday when Northeastern resumes its battle for a CAA playoff spot at William & Mary at 6 p.m.
