BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern men's soccer team (5-4-2, 2-0-0) received goals from
Terence Carter and
Dante Marini, and sophomore goalkeeper
Dylan Faber made four saves to lead the Huskies past Hofstra on Wednesday night at Parsons Field, 2-0.
The win extends Northeastern's unbeaten streak against the Pride to seven matches, and has not lost to Hofstra since 2007. The Huskies held the advantage in every facet of the match, outshooting the Pride 16-12 (9-4 shots on goal) and earned seven corners to Hofstra's six.
The Huskies controlled the pace of play for most of the first half, outshooting Hofstra 9-4, including a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal. NU set the tone from the outset, pressuring the Pride defense and generating scoring chances on Hofstra goalkeeper Patric Pray. Carter went right to work in just the second minute of the match when he took a pass from
Christian McKenna, made a quick move in the box and whistled a shot towards goal that went just over the crossbar.
Conner Alexander, playing at attack for the fourth straight match, nearly gave NU a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when he sent a flick into the box towards Carter, but Pray was there to stop the header bid. McKenna had an opportunity one minute later when he took advantage of a slip by Rory Murphy, went the other way and sent a cross into the box that was blocked out of play.
Hofstra's best chance of the half came in the 19th minute when Chris Griebsch sent in a free kick from 25 yards out that went just over the bar.
Northeastern would strike midway through the half with Carter's fourth goal of the year, and second in as many games.
Dante Marini began the play by streaking down the left side before sending a ball into the box.
Robbie Schallmo, crashing the net, redirected the ball across to Carter, who buried it for a 1-0 Husky lead.
Carter nearly put home his second of the match four minutes later when McKenna threaded a pass up to Carter running down the left side, but Pray was there to turned aside Carter's shot. Schallmo had a scoring opportunity of his own late in the half when his shot from 20 yards out nailed the crossbar, and Pray recovered to save Alexander's header bid on the rebound.
Coming out of the halftime break, Hofstra saw much of the same from the Huskies, who potted a penalty kick goal from Marini 5:11 into the second half. After Marini was hauled down in the box, the senior converted on the PK with a low shot into the left corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, Carter almost gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead when he took a pass from McKenna and fired a shot on goal from the left side. The ball got under Pray, but Nino Alfonso was there to clear the ball out of danger.
Faber worked hard to preserve the shutout in the final 20 minutes of the match, making two point blank saves on low shots from Chris Grenzig and Griebsch. Maid Memic nearly spoiled the clean sheet with 7:07 left in regulation when his shot from atop the box got a piece of the post and went out of play.
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday when Northeastern travels to Drexel for a 4 p.m. match.
