Record-setting night by Pollard pushes Huskies past CCSU, 83-69

BOSTON—Backed by a career-high 27 points from junior Demetrius Pollard, the Northeastern men's basketball team posted its first win of the season by defeating Central Connecticut, 83-69, on Saturday night at Cabot Center.

In addition to his fifth career double-figure scoring game, Pollard added eight 3-point field goals to match a single-game program record. The last Husky to accomplish the feat was Marcus Barnes, who hit eight 3-pointers against Vermont on Jan. 7, 2004.

Zach Stahl and David Walker also contributed to NU's victory, each posting their second double-figure scoring game this season with 15 and 14 points, respectively.  Walker added five rebounds and matched a career-best six assists while Stahl notched two steals and a block.

Scott Eatherton tallied seven points on the night, Chris Avenant matched a career-high five, Jimmy Marshall and T.J. Williams scored four apiece and Reggie Spencer, Kwesi Abakah, Marco Banegas-Flores and Derrico Peck strung together seven to round out the scoring for the Huskies.

As a team, Northeastern shot 50.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc, both good for a season high, while the defense held CCSU to a 43.8 field-goal percentage.

Khalen Cumberlander scored 20 points for CCSU while Terrell Allen also scored in double figures with 11 points as CCSU (0-3) remains winless on the season.

The Huskies (1-2) were strong right out of the chute as Pollard dropped two 3-pointers to give NU a 6-0 start. Central Connecticut's Malcolm McMillan put the Blue Devils on the board with a three, but Pollard recorded three more points from behind the arc to send the Huskies into the first media timeout with a 19-13 lead.

Northeastern would not budge, maintaining a seven-point advantage until an Eatherton dunk gave NU its first double-digit lead of the night, 26-15. CCSU missed three consecutive shots before a 3-pointer brought the Blue Devils to within eight, but a 4-0 Northeastern run gave the Huskies a 12-point advantage, marking the highest lead of the first half.

In an attempt to break NU's momentum, Central Connecticut called a timeout. The Blue Devils responded with a 9-2 surge to enter the half trailing, 39-34.

Pollard started the second half much like the first, landing back-to-back 3-pointers and two free throws to put NU ahead, 47-34. Fouls plagued the Huskies for a stretch and allowed the Blue Devils to score seven points over the next two minutes. CCSU cut NU's cushion to just six points, but a 5-0 run drove the Huskies into a double-digit lead for the second time in the half.

It was all Northeastern for the remainder of the contest as NU led by as many as 16 during two separate occasions down the stretch. With 5:52 left in regulation, Walker threw down a monstrous dunk when he attacked the lane from a half-court set, bringing the crowd to its feet and pushing the Huskies' lead to a commanding 71-58 advantage. The Blue Devils could get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

After CCSU's Juwan Newmen drew his fourth foul of the night, Marshall landed two points from the charity stripe to close out the game, 83-69.

For the game, Northeastern shot 50.9 percent (28-55) from the floor, 52.6 percent (10-19) from 3-point range, and 65.4 percent (17-26) from the free-throw line. Central Connecticut connected on 43.1 percent (28-65) of its attempts from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) on 3-pointers, and 70 percent (7-10) from the charity stripe.

Northeastern returns to action when it heads to the Caribbean for the Puerto Rico Classic. NU's first opponent of the Classic is Georgetown, as the Huskies and Hoyas will battle it out on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 12:30 p.m.
