Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—A career night from sophomore Tiffany Montagne was not enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team (5-4, 0-0 CAA) dropped a 103-66 decision to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason favorite Marist (5-5, 1-0 MAAC) on Wednesday night at McCann Arena.

Montagne notched a career-best 19 points and added four rebounds, an assist and a steal to lead the Huskies. Samantha DeFreese joined Montagne in double-digits with 10 points, Jewel Tunstull contributed eight, and Amencie Mercier and Kazzidy Stewart chipped in 14 points, collectively.

Marist, which has won 10 consecutive conference regular season titles under current head coach Brian Giorgis, has made nine NCAA tournament appearances in the last 11 years. Madeline Blais set the pace for the Red Foxes, leading all scorers with 25 points while Emma O'Connor and Sydney Coffey posted 19 points apiece.

Marist got off to a strong start, posting an early 23-8 lead in the first five minutes of play. Consecutive layups from Stewart and Iriah temporarily slowed the Red Foxes' offense, but Marist posted the next 14 points over four minutes to extend its lead, 39-14.

Northeastern gained some momentum after Montagne drained back-to-back treys to come within 18. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch, but NU pieced together a 15-4 spurt, capped with Montagne's fourth 3-pointer of the night, to close the gap to just 10.

With 22 seconds left in the first frame, the Huskies allowed four points before entering halftime, trailing 54-40.

Tunstull opened the second stanza with a shot from the charity stripe, but Marist landed two buckets to go up 59-41. The Red Foxes took advantage at the free-throw line, tallying four points after drawing consecutive fouls. Over the next two minutes, Marist held the Huskies to one shot while posting nine points.

A jumper from Tunstull kicked off a 5-0 surge as the Huskies attempted battled back, but Northeastern could not stop a red-hot Marist offense from taking the game, 103-66.

For the game, Northeastern shot 36 percent (15-31) from the floor, 31 percent (8-26) from long range, and 67 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe. Marist shot 65 percent (34-53) from the floor, 45 percent (9-20) from beyond the arc, 79 percent (26-33) from the free-throw line and edged NU in the rebound battle (34-33).

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Dec. 21, as they continue their road tour against Massachusetts.

Game Notes
• Tiffany Montagne recorded a career-best 19 points and five 3-pointers to join Kazzidy Stewart as the only current Huskies to post more than four 3-pointers in a single game.
• Samantha DeFreese logged her third double-figure scoring game of the season.
• Amencie Mercier notched her fourth consecutive game as the Huskies' assist leader.
