ARLINGTON, Texas – Northeastern (1-3, 0-0 CAA) held separate three-run and four-run leads, but in the end, UT Arlington (4-1, 0-0 WAC) used nine runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-8 final on Friday night.

Things started off promisingly for the Red and Black, who held an advantage through five and a half innings. First blood was drawn for either side in the third inning when third baseman Pete Castoldi scored on an error after a fly-out. Down one run, UTA bounced back with a run of their own on a RBI triple from Shortall to make things even.

The Huskies scored twice in the fifth inning, thanks to a triple in his own right from Jason Vosler and a fielder's choice coming from Rob Fonseca. Vosler brought home Aaron Barbosa, after the junior's second clean bunt of the game, and Fonseca drove in Vosler. With a 3-1 lead, Carmain did some work on the hill in the bottom of the fifth, striking out Twichell and Shortall, back-to-back, followed by a walk and a groundout to end the inning.

Vosler knocked in yet another run in the sixth, singling home R.J. Roman, who was pinch hitting for Will Dougherty. Before that switch was made, Dougherty had earned the first hit of his career in the fourth inning. But the sixth was big for UTA as well. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk, James Mulry entered the game for NU, but the Mavericks pounced. After a walk to load the bases, Copeland unloaded them for the home team with a clearing double to center, bringing UTA within one.

But in the seventh inning, the Huskies seem to bunker. Connor Lyons started the frame off with what appeared to be a routine ground ball for UTA, but Twichell bobbled the ball, allowing the Husky to make it safely to the bag. After Puttress lined out to center, R.J. Roman bled one through the second-base gap, advancing Lyons. Pete Castoldi then loaded the bases for Barbosa after taking a shot straight to the left side of the helmet.

Barbosa earned his second RBI of the night, advancing the runners on a sacrifice hit in the infield. With a tenuous 5-4 lead, Michael Foster smacked a two-out, bases-clearing double of his own to give the Huskies a more comfortable 7-4 advantage.

Mulry was eventually pulled in favor of fellow classmate Mike Fitzgerald following a lead-off walk. Fitzgerald, making his third appearance on the young season, walked one and allowed a hit early on in his showing, and the Mavericks took full advantage. After a Fitzgerald strikeout, Walker dinged one to center, bringing home two runners with two outs to start the rally. UTA then had back-to-back RBI hits to take the lead, followed by a two-run at bat to give the Mavericks a 10-7 lead heading to the eighth inning.

To start off the eighth inning, Fonseca and Burcroff both drew walks before Lyons pounded one in the gap to load the bases with no outs. Neither Puttress nor Roman could capitalize as each went down on three-pitch strikeouts. Yet another walk by Castoldi brought a run home for NU, but Barbosa ended the inning with a shallow shot to left field.

After getting three outs in a row (including a pickoff at first), the Huskies made a last-ditch effort for a rally in the top of the ninth inning, but to no avail. Three straight outs led to Arlington taking the ball game, 10-8. The two will finish off the series, the first ever between the schools, with a double header on Saturday, set for 1 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. ET, respectively.
